Gary's Interests
|
| Music | While comedy songs of the Tom Lehrer or Monty Python variety had been my thang, I'm now getting into old TV themes. If I'm not mistaken, this is a definite cry for help. My Roger Kellaway fixation has given way to Vince Guaraldi and George Winston, but you still can't beat Peter Schickele (P.D.Q. Bach) for a highbrow guffaw. | | Movies | Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has now taken its rightful place among the upper echelon of animated, marginally-animated, and not-so-animated wonder films of the past 30 years in my collection. This joins other animated classics like Monsters, Inc., as well as the early Tom & Jerry cartoons and any Warner Bros. cartoon featuring Bugs, Wile E. Coyote and/or an anvil.
I like the Ivan Reitman comic oeuvre (always wanted to use that word in a sentence) of Stripes, Ghostbusters and Dave, and the early, not-quite-so-self-absorbed Mel Brooks of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Sprinkle in the even-numbered Star Trek movies and anything having to do with 1950s Quiz Shows, and that leaves The Godfather trilogy ("A rollicking laugh-a-minute chucklefest" - Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE). | | Television | Very little appeals to me. And if you DARE to suggest that I tune into "Deal or No Deal", I am going to reach through your monitor and flick the tip of your nose. | | Books | After years of reading autobiographies, particularly of American humorists/ comedians and B-list celebs (Star Trek Memories, anyone?), I am now getting heavily into books on technical analysis, options trading, and other creative ways to jump into the stock market, lose my shirt, and call it a "tax write-off". | | Heroes | My mother raised four of us, practically by herself, in the face of a LOT of adversity that most people (thankfully) never experience, without losing her mind and without murdering us in our sleep. That's pretty hero-worthy, don't you think? |

Gary's Blurbs |
About me:
Forty-something bitter, cynical carnivore and humorist just marking time until the Apocalypse (or until we rent "Apocalypse Now"). Happily married to a lady that is every bit as eccentric as I am ... that must explain the marriage of a Liberal Arts major and a scientist, or (heaven forbid) a Longhorn and an Aggie. Self-employed and wishing I wasn't (look, YOU try being responsible for your own paycheck for a few years, and you'll be aching to get back under The Man's thumb for a while too). Tall, fairly good-looking, suave and debonair (whatever that means).

Who I'd like to meet:
Fellow eccentrics and borderline vulgarians for intellectual stimulation and a few laughs. (That's not much to ask, is it? Well, maybe it is, given that my only friend requests these days come from "teenage girls" with webcams and a 900 number ...)
