La musique d'Abyss s'articule autour du Takuta. Le Takuta est un style récent de Gwoka, qui est plus ouvert à la transe et aux énergies mystiques. On peut décrire la mystique comme étant une réalité qui défie les règles de l'ordinaire. De même, les rythmes ordinaires commencent tous par une frappe basse, alors que le Takuta et le Lewoz commencent par une frappe haute, ce qui est déroutant pour les sens, et permet de s'ouvrir à une perception musicale littéralement extraordinaire. Ces trois morceaux, Pan Ga To, Abyss, et Dlo Pann, s'inscrivent dans cette dynamique.
ABYSS est le titre qui donne son nom à l'abum. J'ai écrit ce morceau il y a longtemps lors de mes multiples expériences sur le jazz et le gwo ka. Mais je l'ai repris en y ajoutant une introduction chantée à la façon d'un chant Apache. Ce chant permet d'entrer dans l'univers du morceau avec la voix lumineuse d'Elisabeth Kontomanou. Et d'entamer un voyage qui passe par des improvisations paisibles (John Scofield), Tumultueuse (Milan Milanovic), et finalement volcaniques entre Hervé Samb et moi.
PAN GA TO est nommé d';après les morceaux de Vélo: Ti Jean Pan Ga To. Ce morceau décrit la vie de Ti Jean, personnage de contes créoles.
DLO PANN signifie en créole les eaux suspendues. On l'utilise pour décrire la noix de coco, mais dans le contexte de l'album, je me refère plus à une réalité hors de l'ordinaire.La ligne de basse est écrite comme une mélodie à part entière. Interprétée avec maestria par Reggie Washington, elle propulse le morceau sur un pas syncopé, avec en soutien le skank au clavier.
The music of Abyss articulates itself around Takuta. Takuta is a recent style of Gwoka, which is more opened to Trance and Mystic energies. Here we can describe Mystic as being a reality which challenges the rules of the common. At the same time, common rhythms all begin with a low strike, while Takuta and Lewoz begin with a high strike, which is unusual for the senses, and allows to open to a literally extraordinary musical perception. These three pieces, PAN GA TO, ABYSS, and DLO PANN, join this dynamic.
ABYSS is the title which gives its name to the album. I wrote this piece long ago during my multiple experiments on Jazz and Gwo ka. For the album I re-arranged it by adding an introduction with an "Apache Chant". This singing allows to enter the universe of the piece with the beautiful voice of Elisabeth Kantomanou. "From there, a new journey begins with a celestial improv from Jhon Scofield. It continues with a tumultuous Rhodes solo by Milan Milanovic, and finished on a volcanic exchange between Hervé Samb and I".
PAN GA TO is named after the songs of Vélo: Ti Jean Pan Ga To. This piece describes the life of Ti Jean, famous character of Creole tales.
DLO PANN means suspended waters in Creole. We use it describe the coconut, but in the context of the album, I refer myself more to an uncommon reality. The line of bass is written as a melody as a whole part. Interpreted with great panache by Reggie Washington, it propels the piece on a syncopated step, with the skank of the keyboard as a support.
