| About Gypsy Blue |
|
Fall of 1989.
I’m driving down the road with my best friend Jason Woody, sick of playing keys in this high school pop band when I just happen to spit out, “Man, I really want to sing in a band”. Funny, I remember the exact spot that I said it. Jason says “why don’t you go sing in my brother, Justin’s band?” He was in junior high at the time, so it sounded absurd to me, but I gave it a shot. We joined forces immediately. For the next couple of years we went through guitarists and bassists. We went through names like “West Side” and musical style changes until a battle of the bands…two bands…Gypsy Blue and Extortion sparked a uniting of some unlikely individuals. The band became Gypsy Blue and was comprised of : Chris Anderson – Bass, Allen Rivers – Lead and Rhythm Guitar, Justin Lane (Justin Woody) – Drums and Percussion, Dani West (Danny Smith) – Vocals and Acoustic Guitar, Joey Wilson – Lead and Rhythm Guitar.
We soon recorded a demo, got a lot of airplay with the song “You” and began playing all over the south. Frats and Clubs from Dallas to Jackson Mississippi. Our most memorable gigs came when we started opening up for some of our heroes. We started small. We opened for Zebra in our home town, from then we went to Baton Rouge to open for Cheap Trick. Later came Lillian Axe, David Lee Roth, Lou Diamond Phillips (yes he has a band), and the highlight, Warrant. Later, MANY YEARS LATER, after Allen and Justin had moved on, Joey, Chris and Dan tried to keep it together with drummer Rick D, and Drummer Johnny Allen. This never did feel right and eventually it had to come to an end. Joey and Danny are still kickin’ as the acoustic guitar duo “Mavis & Harry”, www.myspace.com/mavisandharryproject, with a somewhat different take on music and life, but Gypsy Blue is at the heart of it all.
Many stories developed over those glory years and many memories too. Not all of them good, but all of them worth being told. I am gathering pictures, articles and every other bits of history I can find. I plan to post stories of our adventures over those 10-13 years. I hope that some of you are interested. If any of you were part of this adventure, and you have stories, bits of info that you want to add, send em to me. Suggestions for a cool title for the blog are welcomed too. Right now I’m using the working title Gypsy Blue Chronicles, but I know there is a better one.
This band was like a family. Everyone has gone there own way now, but the love ain’t gone. I hope this is a decent tribute.
Thanks
Dani West
