Totally with you on the EMU sound mate! I recently discovered a plugin called "Sonitex STX16" or something, it has a bitcrusher section on it that emulates the sound of an EMU fairly well. Part of the magic on the EMU samplers was the 12-bit sound, which made it sound gritty/lo-fi. Try that plug out if you have the time.
