Hackett House is at 6-8 Old Bankstown Plaza, Bankstown. Its across from Bankstown train station and says Hackett House on its front in big letters, but if you get lost look for some signs that say "BYDS" or "Vietnamese Australian Welfare Association".
Taking inspiration from DIY warehouse spaces such as Maggotville, Lanfranchis and Yvonne Ruve in the inner west and city, we will break down music to the essentials: a room with a PA and some bands to (to quote Wu Tang Clan) “bring da motherfuckin' ruckus” - and don't forget the cheap door charge.
With that in mind, we would like to bring that DIY spirit to life in the western suburbs via a – eventually – monthly Sunday afternoon show at Hackett House.
Hackett House will create an alternative to band comps as the only way for many young bands/artists to fill in the gaps between the once or twice a year youth festivals such as Gravitate. These shows are based on co-operation and artistic mutual aid instead of a competitive environment which judges bands and artists as more or less talented/legitimate/popular/worthy than others.
When asking bands to play, we will try to adhere to a policy of having at least 40% of the bands/artists at each show are from the local area. We also recognise that although not necessarily intentional, music has a tendency to be male-dominated so we will strive for a gender balance amongst performers at each show.
The first of these shows will be on Sunday September 28 – the first weekend of the next school holidays. If successful, we can work toward organising shows more often from March 2009 onwards, after Stono finishes her HSC and Luke finds himself (or typhoid) somewhere along the Mekong River.
Please read and familiarise yourself with the safer spaces document written for these shows. It's posted in the blog section of this page.
We hope to keep most aspects of the events, such as the safer spaces policy, in a constant state of evolution by remaining open to all suggestions and criticism.
