Breathtaking panoramas of Yosemite Valley, including one that was on loan to the White House, are among twelve paintings in the art collection by Albert Bierstadt. Other large landscape paintings by artisits such as George Inness, William Keith, Thomas Moran, and Julian Rix enhance the museum's collection of nineteenth-century American Art.
Also on display in the Museum's fine art galleries are paintings by late nineteenth and early twentieth-century European artists. Highlights include works by the great animal painter Rosa Bonheur, the neo-classical artist William Bouguereau, the popular French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and many more. Antique tables, chairs, clocks and other decorative arts complement these beautiful works.
HISTORY-
The museum's extensive history galleries offer a chance to travel back in time to learn more about Stockton and California history. Displays focus on area Native Americans, the Gold Rush, agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley, historic firefighting equipment, as well as shipbuilding and other Stockton industries.
Visitors will see period rooms from a Victorian-era San Joaquin Valley ranch home, a recreated local flour mill, and a turn-of-the-century California town that includes a one-room schoolhouse and a Chinese herb shop. Beautiful Native American baskets, an antique steam fire engine called "Old Betsy", a Holt Caterpillar tractor, and a World War II jeep are among the thousands of historical treasures on display in these galleries. The Ancient Arts gallery takes visitors further back in time to Egypt and other ancient cultures in Meso-America and the Mediterranean.
SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS-
Each year the museum offers a series of exciting special exhibitions and displays. Some are organized to highlight the Haggin's permanent collections. Many feature premier works from other museums.
Upcoming shows include:
The Art Books of Henri Matisse provided by Bank of America Art in our Communities Program (opening June 28th) and the highly anticipated return of Plein-Air Painters of America 22nd Exhibition & Sale featuring pieces inspired by our national parks(opening October 2nd).
LIBRARY/ARCHIVE-
Behind-the-scenes at the museum is an extensive archive that houses thousands of books, historic photographs, maps, and other items relating to Stockton and California history. Holdings include records of significant Stockton industries like Stephens Bros. Boatbuilders, Holt manufacturing Co., Tillie Lewis Foods, Sperry Flour Co. and others. More than one thousand original Ralph Yardley drawings highlight the history of Stockton. An art library offers books and other materials relating to the museum's art collections.
Researchers should call (209) 940-6324 or email archive@hagginmuseum.org to make an appointment.
Have you grown up in Stockton and remember going on field trips to The Haggin Museum as a kid? Maybe you're a UOP or Delta student and have done research in the archives or have written a report on our great turn of the century art collection. Whatever your story is, tell us about it. We want to hear all about your stories of how scary the Mummy seemed when you were 10, or how excited you were when you art was entered in the McKee Student Art Exhibition. The Haggin Museum has been serving Stocktonians for over 75 years, making lots of friends along the way, so if you have a fond memory, lets hear it.
