What people are already saying about NOVEL SOUNDS OF THE NOUVEAU SOUTH
"Novel Sounds is violent, literate, unapologetic Southern rock. With its angelic organ and snarling guitars, "The Outpouring" conjures the Allmans, "Hold My Feet to the Fire" drops gospel harmonies over a boogie-woogie backbeat, and the fingerpicked "Close Every Valve to Your Bleeding Heart" builds from tender to raging without a false note." -David Peisner, SPIN (June 2009)
"(Novel Sounds) Occupies the sweet spot between country and indie, writing ornery songs with big hooks. Listen if you want your alt country to be heavy on the alt." -J. Edward Keyes, RollingStone.com (May 2009)
"...in crafting a more challenging album—a more mature album—Ha Ha Tonka have, against the odds, crafted a much better album, too. Novel sounds, indeed." -PopMatters (June 2009)
"If Novel Sounds was a novel, it'd be Southern gothic. The songs are full of sin and violence, with echoes of the Civil War ("The Horse In Motion," "A Siege Of Sorts") and lynch mobs ("What Shepherds Of These Hills?"). There aren't many laughs to be had with this record but it's a solid achievement." -Kerry Doole, Exclaim (June 2009)
"With feet to the fire and one blind eye, they divine rough, chunky truths on their sophomore album, Novel Songs of the Nouveau South, letting churchy harmonies and bad boy rock attitude commingle around the holy water they've collected."
-Jam Base
"Ha Ha Tonka perfects power-chill in its second installment, Novel Songs of the Nouveau South...It's indie rock from the heartland; the spirit of the back-country with a peppy snare and some serious guitar."
-Vox Magazine
"These Missouri natives have a natural way with a pop hook and instinctive feeling for myriad forms of Southern music...Ha Ha Tonka is truly one of the best young bands in America."
-Sound Affects
"What sets the band apart is the fact that you just don't care how familiar it may all ultimately sound, as just about every track on the group's new Novel Songs of the Nouveau South hits it out of the park"
-Time Out Chicago
"Their new Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South ups the ante and the amperage, wiring the weather vane into a lighting rod."
-OSU Weekly
Here's what some folks have said after listening to our first record BUCKLE IN THE BIBLE BELT
"It’s the best rock record I’ve heard this year. There’s nothing on the White Stripes’ recent Icky Thump as convincingly roots-rockin’ as “Caney Mountain,”...Power-pop hook kings the New Pornographers couldn’t manage a track as infectious as Ha Ha Tonka’s “Falling In” on their latest, Challengers—and they’ve got Neko Case! Trust me, folks, this is really strong stuff." Josh Timmerman - PopMatters.com
"HHT deftly mixes sweet harmonies and raw, spewing rock and roll. Miss this record at your own risk." John Holcomb - Amplifier
"A precocious, stammering rock record that bridges sweet-water gospel folk with sweltering Southern rock." CMJ Essentials
"It's practically hopeless for me to try and compare this album or band to someone else. Everyone today is trying to be new and different, so as to have an edge on the competition. Well, Ha Ha Tonka has done it." Rachel Frederickson - Hybrid Music
"Blasting from our offices:rich with personal stories and people eager to pound the floorboards to crunchy, sun-soaked roots rock." SPIN Magazine
“…a confident set of rootsy indie-rock combining a variety of well-crafted songs with excellent harmonies. At times the band’s sound recalls Kings of Leon, but other influences poke through, from backwoods gospel to the Replacements." Don Yates - KEXP Seattle
I saw you in Chicago on October 23 @ the Bottom Lounge. You're BY FAR my favorite band. I feel like I've been waiting all of my life to hear your music. If I felt the way that I felt when I listen to your music, all the time I would be the happiest & nicest person. I think that you guys should hire me as your PR person. This weekend I was at this party and went around talking to everyone about your music... I went up to my friend and started talking to him about it and he said "Goddamnit Natalie, not only is this the 2nd time you've talked to me about Ha Ha Tonka tonight, I went to the fucking show with you!" This is how efficient I am. I can't wait for you guys to come back to Chicago after you're done touring. You guys should start making a new album now too.
Just stopping by to let everybody know we have some brand new songs posted on our page from our upcoming album "Telling Lies and Cutting Ties".
We would love it if you could stop by our page check out all the new stuff and let us know what you think.
You can also now find us on Facebook!! So if you use that alot you can either search for us on there, or use the link on our Myspace and become a fan of us on there as well.
Thank you as always for your support of Onasis. We can't wait to hear what you think.
At first I was thinking, "Two shows in one semester will do just fine..." but then I realized that I am impatient, and am on a "Ha Ha Tonka high" that just won't go away... so I'm probably going to have to fly out to LA next weekend to see you again.
saw you guys saturday night at the blue note.. it was the first i have heard of you. you guys fucking rocked it!!!!!! that entire show was the best show i have been to yet. i'm spreading the word of your badassery midwest style. keep rocking!!!! :)
You guys were so awesome in Chicago! And it was great meeting half of you after the show! :) Now, just do me and my lovely friend a favor and tour with Tommy and The High Pilots in the midwest and I promise you delicious baked goods as a reward for bringing us so much musical greatness.
Your 12/2 show in New York is 21+. My girlfriend and I really want to come, but she's only 20.
We are of the opinion that you guys should pull some strings, and get her into that show. After all, Lucas ate her sandwich on stage the other night, so some payback is in order!!
Wish I could make up from Cincy to the Columbus show tomorrow, guys. If you're headed southbound and need to crash somewhere after the show, just give a holler!
