The Halifax Pop Explosion is one of Canada's most respected festivals & showcases for new and emerging music, art, and culture. Founded in 1993, the festival features the best in new and music, and fuses it with the unique perspectives and exhibitions of art, media and pop culture, from Halifax, Canada, and around the world.
Since our founding 17 years ago, the Halifax Pop Explosion has historically combined the excitement of the global underground music scene with the booming Halifax indie pop scene. The Festival has expanded its programming to support other genres within the independent music community from hip-hop and electronica to folk, alt-country, punk, hardcore and everything in between.
The Halifax Pop Explosion takes place on the second weekend after Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus day in the United States. Last year's festival featured over 150 performances by 143 bands all over Halifax over the five days and drew 15,500 people. There is really something for everyone interested in the sounds of new music.
The Halifax Pop Explosion continues to set the stage for a variety of independent music and art by presenting the Indie Zine and Label Fair, one of Canada's largest self publishing zine fairs, with art exhibitions and showcases throughout the city, and the Music Matters Conference, a 2-day independent music workshop and educational opportunity.
