HALLELUJAH's story began in August 2001 with a drummer named Joey putting an ad in the classified section of the now defunct PUNCHLINE weekly(Richmond,VA), looking to start a band. Unbeknowest to Joey, his roommate Jason had been letting a strange guy named Bill sleep on his floor for the previous month. Bill (a bass player recently removed from his native Roanoke,VA) was reading through PUNCHLINE looking for a band to play with and was impressed with an ad he came across listing a score of awesome bands for influences. One of Joey's other roommates was like "That's Joey's ad...he lives upstairs, you should jam with him when he gets home." Bill did just that and a two-piece unit, just before their first show became known as ATOMATRON. After a while Bill and Joey decided to let Aaron join the band as noise guy. Then came Mike, as a singer, and out went Aaron to move back to Texas, leaving the three to record their first nine songs at the Glass Hand with sound engineer Mark Miley in March of 2002, three of which would appear on cnpr5 split 7" w/ SUPPRESSION in 2003. After a trying out a few differant guitarists, Joey,Bill and Mike settled with John (who had been making his rounds in the music scene w/ CIRCUIT HALO and The WANGS), and as a four-piece recorded their next 10 songs at John's studio (The Etching Tin) for a CDR titled "It's Your Erection"
in early 2003. After a bit of touring Mike grew tired and left the group, and the remaining three decided to regroup and thought that changing the name would be a good idea (especially with the multitude of tron bands out there). So came Hallelujah! and after a bit of practice and a few songs, Mike saw what he had been missing and rejoined the group and recorded HALLELUJAH! "Open The Door And Rejoice!" CD (cnpr7) (also at the Etching Tin) in late 2004. Mike decided his time would be better spent in school learning the ins and outs of circuitry, and left the band again with no hard feelings. The 3 pressed on and eventually found Joe to fill in where Mike had left off. The future holds a new CD perhaps? contact hallelujahrichmondva@hotmail.com or call (804) 502-5123.

We've never been able to quite pin down exactly what it is that The Hunter Gracchus do, which is a wonderful thing. A shifting unit with Syed Kamran Ali, Fiona Marshall and Jon Marshall at the core, they have recently settled into a fairly stable unit of six, but it's hard to know how long that'll last. Still, while it does, it's producing all manner of magical and highly unexpected performances. The one captured here was recorded at the band's practice room cum gig space, Fagin's Hideout/The Furniture Makers and is a less blistering freakout than some of their recent output, preferring to quietly explore every nook of tonal space. It simmers rather than erupts and, the longer you become immersed in it, the less aware you become of the passage of time. It's a recording that feels like it should go on forever and, when it does come to a close, the silence is shocking. In a time when it's all too easy for a group of improvisers to just go full-tilt in some euphoric pursuit, the Hunter Gracchus provides us with a glowing alternative that draws us slowly in and drowns our senses. This is truly awesome.
Peeesseye I Woke Up and Drank a Bottle of Cheap Kojak CDR
Peeesseye made the scene at Dylan Nyoukis's Colour Out of Space festival last summer and hopped over to Manchester to play a show at the Town Hall Tavern, the recording of which forms the content of this incredible slab of dense droning harmonium, scraping, buzzing, subtly soloing guitar and pulse-free, scatter-drumming. We can't recommend this enough. Limited to 80 copies.

How do we rock thee? Let us count the ways. We rock thee to the depth and breadth and height our souls can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. We rock thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. We rock thee freely, as men strive for Right; We rock thee purely, as they turn from Praise. We rock thee with a passion put to use In our old griefs, and with our childhoods' faith. We rock thee with a beat we seemed to lose With our lost picks, --- we rock thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all our lives! --- and, if God choose, We shall but rock thee better after death.
