Hambawenah came into being in 1996. Originally the band performed sailors' songs, shanties based on anglo-saxon traditions. After a while it concentrated more and more on music which accompanied Polish bargemen rafting timber down the Vistula and other rivers at work and rest. Etnographically valuable and musically unique the repertoire soon won wide appreciation.
In search for inspiration the band not only looks through archives and ethnographic resources but tries to get in touch with those few who still remember the rafters' craft and its traditions. Working on such material the band members make it a priority to preserve the original melody, dialects and characteristic jargon. On the other hand, introducing electric instruments and drums they make the music more acceptable to contemporary listeners yet not depriving it of its folk character. Morover, each musician have their own musical sensitivity and style, which add to the distinguishing harmony and character of Hambawenah's pieces.
