The Greater Hamilton County Local's Blurbs
About me:

We are the Greater Hamilton County Local of the SPUSA, and we are here to bring about democratic socialist change through peaceful means.

Our meetings take place on the first Monday of every month starting at 7:oo PM in the library on UTC campus. Open forum meetings take place every third Monday at Stone Cup on Frazier Avenue in the North Shore region of downtown Chattanooga.

Our current efforts involve the Red Food campaign and a Counter-Recruitment campaign.

Our local constitution will be coming soon; for now here is part of the statement of principles from the Socialist Party USA website

THE SOCIALIST PARTY strives to establish a radical democracy that places people's lives under their own control -- a non-racist, classless, feminist, socialist society in which people cooperate at work, at home, and in the community.

Socialism is not mere government ownership, a welfare state, or a repressive bureaucracy. Socialism is a new social and economic order in which workers and consumers control production and community residents control their neighborhoods, homes, and schools.
The production of society is used for the benefit of all humanity, not for the private profit of a few. Socialism produces a constantly renewed future by not plundering the resources of the earth.

Under capitalist and "Communist" states, people have little control over fundamental areas of their lives. The capitalist system forces workers to sell their abilities and skills to the few who own the workplaces, profit from these workers' labor, and use the government to maintain their privileged position.
Under "Communist" states, decisions are made by Communist Party officials, the bureaucracy and the military. The inevitable product of each system is a class society with gross inequality of privileges, a draining of the productive wealth and goods of the society into military purposes, environmental pollution, and war in which workers are compelled to fight other workers.

People across the world need to cast off the systems which oppress them, and build a new world fit for all humanity. Democratic revolutions are needed to dissolve the power now exercised by the few who control great wealth and the government. By revolution we mean a radical and fundamental change in the structure and quality of economic, political, and personal relations.
The building of socialism requires widespread understanding and participation, and will not be achieved by an elite working "on behalf of" the people. The working class is in a key and central position to fight back against the ruling capitalist class and its power. The working class is the major force worldwide that can lead the way to a socialist future – to a real radical democracy from below.

Who I'd like to meet:
People in the greater Hamilton County area who are interested in grass roots activism and what democratic American socialism can do for us.

Indigenous Peoples Message to the U.S. antiwar movement

We call on the U.S. antiwar movement to acknowledge that the very establishment of the United States and it's expansion was built on the genocide against the First Nations/Indigenous Peoples of the continent, along with the enslavement of African peoples & exploitation of peoples from around the globe.

Iraq (and the over 130 countries that have a presence of U.S. military) is just a continuation of "Manifest Destiny" which cleared the continent for settler colonization. Thus it's not a "mistake" of U.S. policy, but is at the core of the very foundation of the U.S. from it's beginnings continuing thru to today.

Thus, we say that the antiwar mobilizations that are taking place in March/April 2008

1)have an indigenous person opening the events ackowledging the above history and it's continuation into the present day and how U.S. history is linked to today's war(s).

2)that there be an organized and visible collective presence of contingents focused on indigenous peoples concerns at the mobilizations along with that presence being also on the websites, press releases, media spokespeople, et. al of these groups/mobilizations.

3)that the indigenous names of cities/towns in the various indigenous languages be acknowledged by also being mentioned to remind people of the indigenous origins of this land (for example "Manatay" for what is now called Manhattan ) along with the peoples (for example: Lenape (& others)) and the original languages.

MLK marchers confront racist Lou Dobbs at CNN
Cuerpo: I just returned from the freezing and dynamic March Against Racism held here in New York City to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday.

Despite being one of the coldest days so far this winter (27 degrees with a wind chill around 0), and despite being on a weekday holiday that many workers don't get off, more than 1,500 people marched. We stuck it out for almost 30 blocks from Madison Square Garden, new home of racist radio shock jock Don Imus, to CNN headquarters in Columbus Circle, home of immigrant-basher Lou Dobbs.

Photobucket

The fact that so many people turned out in spite of the weather was thrilling. So was the composition of the crowd -- Black, Latino, Arab, Asian, Native and white, women and men, queer and straight, young and old. The chants included everything from "Free the Jena 6" to "End the Siege of Gaza." We also learned that the march by white supremacists in Jena, LA, brought out only a dozen Klansmen, while counter-demonstrators (including from New York) numbered over 300.

Best of all, though, was near the end -- as the march was filling up the block outside CNN headquarters. The arrogant, slicked-down Lou Dobbs and his posse of beefy bodyguards crossed the street as if they were going to try to take over the stage and give the racist yet another platform.

Photobucket

Well, Lou Dobbs quickly learned otherwise. This wasn't a crowd that was going to let him turn its cause into a media stunt. While the crowd chanted him down, Million Worker March leader Brenda Stokely was on the mic, denouncing Dobbs, his Time Warner bosses and the corporate sponsors who keep his foul mouth on the air.

In his arrogance, Dobbs actually did a service to the demonstration, since the confrontation means there will probably far more coverage of it in the mainstream media.

To read more about the march and to get involved in upcoming activities to mark the

Brian Moore for President. Stewart Alexander for Vice President. Vote Socialist in 2008!

Brian Moore (Bio) and Stewart Alexander (Bio) are the Socialist Party USA candidates for President and Vice President of the United States in the 2008 election.

Platform Summary
It is important that we question recent developments resulting from 911 and the Iraq War:

• Congressional support and implementation of the Patriot Act
•Warrantless searches of Americans
• Condoning of domestic spying on both antiwar groups and average American citizens
• Turning a blind eye and tolerating any form of prisoner abuse and torture
• Allowing the deprivation of American citizen and foreign prisoner rights
• The intimidation of free speech and lawful dissent in our country

1) Stop the Iraq War, bring the troops home immediately.
2) Implement a national health care system, single payer form.
3) Design and Initiate a guaranteed income for all American families, working or not.
4) Cap and REDUCE corporate profits and executive salary levels WHILE FOSTERING THE TRANSFER OF CORPORATE PRODUCTION, SERVICE, OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL TO WORKERS.
5) Mandate labor union representation for all American workers to assure fair salaries and equal benefits.
6) Implement a national housing plan for all Americans.
7) Encourage fair trade over free trade and stop America's participation in NAFTA, CAFTA, WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION, WORLD BANK, IMF, etc.
8) Stop the guaging and ripoffs of consumers by legislating limits and caps for costs in services and products in the market place.
9) Abolish poverty in all its forms in America by assuring every American family with the basics in income, health, education and housing.
10) Promote a more equitable society by enhancing citizens rights and participatory control while requiring the private sector to practice and implement a fairer economic sytem of consumer costs, proftit-margins and regulation and policing of its services and products.

I'm assuming this is not a RED only campaign, and that if I were to, say, get others who are just as passionate about the end of the bush regime that they would be welcomed as well?
