Sounds Like
from Inti Illimani to the Penguin Café Orchestra to Rolf Harris
Although born in London, my parents have done their best to convince me I am Scottish... and with a name like Hamish, what else could I do but learn the pipes? The Pogues introduced me to the tin whistle and Irish folk, and Victor Jara's "Te recuerdo Amanda" took me to Chile when I was 18 years old. I now live in Spain where I work in an American university as an English professor.
I play Highland, Lowland and Galician pipes, guitar, charango, whistles and the spoons and also compose whenever I have the opportunity. Finis Terrae, an accoustic sextet based on folk rhythms, is my main project but I also play in a trio with the cellist Rafael Domínguez and percussionist Robbie K Jones. What I like most, however, is composing.
Recently I've been playing about putting music to some of my favourite poems....
