"MY PERSONAL STANDOUT SONG WAS [HAMISH] NAPIER JNR'S BEAUTIFULLY MODULATED, ACHINGLY POIGNANT RENDITION OF [SCOTS SONG] GIN I WAS A BARON'S HEIR, BLENDING AN APT BOYISH LIGHTNESS WITH AN INTENSITY OF YEARNING THAT RAISED A MAJOR LUMP IN THE THROAT." The Scotsman, Hamish with 'Back of the Moon'
"...HAMISH NAPIER EXCELLING ON THE QUIETER AND MORE SENSITIVE SONGS...MY FAVOURITE IS THE SONG BARON OF BRACKLEY...IS WONDERFULLY SUNG BY HAMISH, WHOSE ACCOMPANIMENT ON KEYBOARDS IS ALWAYS EXCELLENT."
Living Tradition Magazine, Hamish with 'Back of the Moon'
"PIANO, FLUTE, WHISTLE, SINGING AND STEP DANCING, HAMISH NAPIER IS ONE OF THE FINEST YOUNG MUSICIANS IN SCOTLAND. A MULTI-TALENTED BUNDLE OF ENERGY, HIS MUSIC IS INVIGORATING, PASSIONATE AND STEEPED IN TRADITION. PAIR HIM WITH OTHER YOUNG MUSICIANS SUCH AS HIS BROTHER FINDLAY NAPIER, ANNA MASSIE, ALI HUTTON, ROSS AINSLIE AND INNES WATSON - ALL OF WHOM REPRESENT THE CREAM OF THE CROP - AND YOU HAVE THE MAKINGS OF A CRACKING AND ENLIGHTENING NIGHT."

Welcome to my space! I am a Scottish traditional folk musician/music-teacher living in Glasgow, currently pursuing studies in jazz. For the past seven years I was fortunate enough to play with award-winning folk quartet Back of the Moon, touring extensively throughout Europe, Canada, the USA and performing on live television broadcasts for British, French, Slovenian, Canadian and US television. In 2003 the band won the folk band competition at Lorient Interceltic Festival, France (an award previously won by Capercaillie). In 2005 The Band were awarded the title of 'Best Folk Band' at the Scots Trad Awards and were also nominated in the 'Best Album' category for ‘Luminosity.’
I play piano, flute, whistle, sing and dance (Cape Breton Stepdance). I was a finalist in the 'Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year Award 2006' and was nominated for 'Best Up and Coming Artist' at the Scots Trad Awards 2005.
Originally from Grantown-on-Spey, in the Highlands of Scotland, I have been playing music from the age of nine. My mother, Marie-Louise Napier, is a singer/composer/harpist and my older brother Findlay Napier is a singer/songwriter/guitarist.
As a regular on the Glasgow Scottish Folk Scene, I have had the opportunity to play in a variety of recording sessions, ceilidhs and concerts with musicians from The Peatbog Faeries, Old Blind Dogs, Wolfstone, Salsa Celtica, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Emily Smith Band, Croft Number Five, Session A9, The Fred Morrison Band and The Battlefield Band.
At 25, I have recorded on a dozen Scottish traditional albums, some produced by leading Scottish musicians including Donald Shaw (ex-Capercaille), Martyn Bennett, (Irvin Duguid (ex-Stiltskin), Johnny Hardie (Old Blind Dogs) and BBC Scotland presenter Mary Ann Kennedy.

My own project, The Hamish Napier Duo pairs me up with a choice of guitar/fiddle players: Alistair White (Battlefield Band), Aaron Jones and Ali Hutton (Old Blind Dogs), Anna Massie, and Innes Watson (Fred Morrison Band) to name but a few. We have appeared four times at Glasgow's Piping Live Festival and twice at Celtic Connections, the latter of which the Glasgow Herald wrote "...CONSISTENTLY EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE, WITH...HAMISH’S EXCITING FLUTE AND FLAT-PICKED GUITAR PARTNERSHIP WITH ANNA MASSIE...”
I am a music teacher at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton High School teaching, piano, whistle and groupwork on a weekly basis. I am also a part-time lecturer at Stow College in Glasgow, teaching on their HNC in Traditional Music. For three years I taught tin whistle at two community based projects, Glasgow Fiddle Workshop and Greater Easterhouse Arts Project. I have also held music workshops at dozens of Celtic music schools, summer camps and festivals both at home and abroad, including;
· Celtic Connections, Scotland

Sorry, jazz piano! Didn't read it very carefully did I?! Yes, Jenny keeps reminding me what a pedantic bastard I was with Scalextric: "When you crash you have to say "Off!"" etc... The new stuff is amazing, all digital and that. I'd have gone spare back in the day! How's your family? I often think of the goodtimes and long summers at Cerrygrove!
Hi! I had a dream last week I saw you playing on TV with Ewan and Fraser (who was playing bass and singing...) I am good thanks, living in Brighton doing the band thing and teaching guitar. What you studying at jazz college?
Thanks, Hamish, for adding our duo of hammered dulcimer and piano. Of people in our area, only Sue Hamlin sings the version of Auld Lang Syne that you play here. John and I enjoyed your Back of the Moon concert at Old Songs a while ago.
Somethings gone really wrong in the world. This Friday I'm starting a residency at Scotch Corner, it's the wee pub next door to The Clutha Vaults on Stockwell Street.
If you're not up to anything on Friday, please consider coming along to get this thing started with bang! I'll be starting from 9.30 and playing two 45 minute sets. And, then every Friday from then on!
Drinks are nicely priced, it's free entry (cause it's a pub!) and a really nice atmosphere.
Hey! How's the weather over there? I just want to let you know that i'm coming to the UK in late May/early June to play bass with Kevin Montgomery and Tommy Allsup. Tommy played guitar with Buddy Holly, and is THE guy that flipped the coin with Ritchie Valens. I figured that with you being a musician that you would really be able to appreciate this show. Kevin made a little video at my studio last week while we were recording....check it out http://myspacetv. com/index. cfm?fuseaction=vids. individual&videoid=34589518
There are a series of shows in England and Scotland....dates are on my myspace.
We won't be doing my material, but it is a really special show, and Tommy is a true rock'n'roll legend.
Anyway, take care and hope to see you there.

We play a few shows in Scotland, but we don't have a Glasgow show. We do play very near there though at a place called Irvine on Friday, June 6th. I hope you can make it?
