Guns and Tampons: A History of Violence Against Women I Know

when it comes to your city! <3

Hanalei Ramos is a Filipina-American community organizer, educator, and performer from Jersey City, New Jersey. She has toured around the nation to various college and university campuses as a spoken word artist, and has also been seen as a performer and panelist at GirlFest Honolulu, the National Asian-American Student Conference, the East Coast Asian-American Student Union, and the March for Women’s Lives. She holds a degree in English and secondary education, and as a community artist educator, she has taught writing and poetry workshops to youth and senior women in the Jersey City and New York City area. Hanalei has also completed the Asian Arts Initiative’s nationally modeled "Artists in Community Training" program (ACT.) Most recently, she has authored Letters to Martha, a personal testimony to her own experience as a survivor of domestic violence, and Foiled Stars, a collection of poems and prose. Her first solo performance work, Guns and Tampons: A History of Violence Against Women I Know, was created through the generosity of the Asian Arts Initiative (Philadelphia), and will be excerpted at the National Asian-American Theater Festival in New York City in June 2007.

"At Yakutat, the Tlingit Indians noticed one Filipino among the crew.
Malaspina wrote in his journal that the Tlingits visited often while
their ships were anchored Yakutat Bay. Malaspina got an insight into
the character of the Filipinos by what happened to a Filipino crew
member of Atrevida. From the time of their first visit to that
convene, the Indians believed that the Filipino was one of them. They
closely examined his fair skin, the features of his face, and even the
different limbs. They begged the Filipino to remain with the tribe and
inquired how he had come among the Spaniards or if he had bought or
stolen.

Cutter believed that it was Geronimo Arcangel, one of the Filipino
sailors in the Lima expedition, who was examined by the Tlingits."
