Without a single doubt, Hanatarash were the quintessential noise outfit that no one could surpass, not even these days but then again that will come as no surprise to no one. Pimple-faced noise escapism reigns again amongst the kiddies but it has never sounded as lame and pale as it does now. Conclusion – boredom is hip. Churning out one micro release after another, one starts to wonder what’s the point of such a carefully crafted commercial strategy. Apart from creating one’s self sustained and lubricated cult status to show off with at numerous blog sites, it also helps to conceal the mediocre nature of the releases in question and the music it acclaims to contain. This last aspect comes especially to the foreground when comparing it to the vary-colored sound palette, inventiveness and originality that only a very few noise practitioners were blessed with and quintessential noise outfit par excellence, fronted by soon to be become Boredoms front man Yamatsuka Eye’s Hanatarash is certainly one of truly gifted outfits. Hanatarash unleashed lethal and omni-pulverizing sonic frostbites with an unadulterated brutality and witty humor fusing neatly with an untamed kamikaze spirit. An assault on the senses and good taste. Just one word to describe this band – utter greatness, many were called for this kind of music but only Hanatarash got up and delivered the goods, leaving all the other posers enough room to jerk off on meaningless blog sites. This is the one and only real thing and please do not go with cheap substitutes. This is the archetypical and quintessential noise outfit that makes all other shrivel up and evaporate in comparison. Massive and indispensable.

"Noise unit from Osaka, founded in 1983 by Yamatsuka Eye. Hanatarashi literally means "sniveler", ie a person with a snotty or runny nose. Others translate it at "Snot-nosed".
Hanatarash are infamous for their extremely dangerous live shows consisting entirely of on-stage destruction and utter disregard for anyone's safety. The most notorious incident involved Yamatsuka throwing junk around with a backhoe inside a venue. On another occasion, he inflicted a deep wound on his leg with an electrical saw, but carried on with the show. A dead cat is also known to have been cut in half during a show. The band once caused so much damage to a live house in Kyoto that it was forced to close.
At a 1985 gig in Tokyo's Superloft, Hanatarash had the audience fill out forms relieving the band of responsibility for any possible bodily harm caused by the performance. The show stopped just as Yamatsuka was about to throw a lit molotov cocktail onto the stage, which was gasoline-drenched from a barrel. The performance cost the venue ¥600,000 ($6000) in repair costs.
Soon unable to be allowed to play anywhere, Yamatsuka went on to form Ultra Freak Out Or Die and Boredoms, among countless other projects. The 1990s saw Hanatarash resurface with some releases and performances, sans on-stage mayhem."
