Bio
I am a bass trombonist, an African hand percussionist, and a composer. I consider myself to be a progressive music teacher who strives to teach my students the different ways of using their voices to build and make unified communities through music. I am originally from the US but I am currently living and pursuing a PhD in Music at Newcastle University, UK. I began my musical career as a trombone player, at the age of 9, in elementary school. Attended Norfolk State University (a historically black college) to study music and became a member of the Spartan Legion Marching Band. In 2001 I joined the Cadets of Bergen County drum and bugle corps before transferring to Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, I worked with the Community Artist Residency Training Series as a workshop facilitator, and went on to coordinate a wide variety of music workshops and projects. I graduated with a BFA in Music Education and went on to teach in the Trenton, NJ Public School System. After working with various communities in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut, I moved to Durban, South Africa, and enrolled at the University of Kwazulu-Natal. While in Durban I taught drumming for an African Music and Dance module and taught a Music Education module which emphasized creating and programing concerts. I also studied various music styles and instruments in that region. With my band Hannabiell & Midnight Blue, we performed in the US, South Africa and the UK. Through my music I aspire to bring communities together and challenge stereotypes. For me, music is a means for breaking down personal and cultural barriers. -
