Bio
NEW CD of the TRIO IVOIRE "Across the Oceans" released October 2009 by ENJA records in Europe feat. singer and Mbira-player Chiwoniso from Zimbabwe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- solo CD "Between the keys" (das virtuelle Klavier) released in March of 2009. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Luedemann - piano & virtual piano------------------------------------------------------- Hans Lüdemann, the German Jazz piano virtuoso, composer and improviser, expands the piano into a microtonal and multitimbral instrument on adventurous musical journeys - reaching "between the keys" and "beyond the tones". The record is his third solo release, but the first to illuminate the delicate and expressive piano sound with virtual backgrounds, opening new spaces and creating different shades of Jazz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HANS LUEDEMANN Pianist, composer and improviser Hans Lüdemann is at home in all musical worlds. He has found his own way on his search for contemporary forms of expression without borders. His roots in European tradition and Jazz melt with African influences. In a subtle way, these have been become integral part of his personal way of improvising and composing music. Lüdemann likes to take the listener on adventurous journeys, looking for the "notes between the keys" and the "music beyond the tones", reviving the historic instrument Clavichord and expanding the piano with electronic samples into a microtonal instrument. Born 1961 in Hamburg, Hans Lüdemann started to articulate musical ideas at age 5, at 6 to study classical piano. To follow his musical ideas was his motivation of intense occupation with music. After having lived in Los Angeles, USA, for one year in 1978/79, Lüdemann studied Jazz piano with Joachim Kühn in Hamburg. He started his own projects of solo piano and groups with Andreas Willers and Gebhard Ullmann. He moved to Köln to study at the Musikhochschule, where he received the first "Konzertexamen" in Jazz-piano in Germany. Lüdemann went to Banff/Canada for advanced studies with Dave Holland, Steve Coleman, Muhal Richard Abrams and Anthony Davis. From 1982 - 1993 he had a close collaboration with Roger Hanschel/Reiner Linke in the groups NANA/Blau Frontal/NANA-Orchester. In 1985 Lüdemann became member of the group CHORUS with Eberhard Weber/Jan Garbarek, starting his international professional career with a tour of Asia. Since then has worked with many fine musicians, among them Paul Bley (piano Duo CD), Mark Feldman, Marc Ducret, Heinz Sauer, Toumani Diabaté, Albert Mangelsdorff and played in the groups of saxophonist Angelika Niescier and singer Eda Zari. Lüdemann first travelled to Africa in 1983 and has developed a strong personal relation to African music. In 2002, he accompanied German President Johannes Rau on his journey to West and South Africa. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today Lüdemann concentrates on his own projects such as the TRIO IVOIRE with Aly Keita (Balaphon) and Chander Sardjoe (drums), his solo programs, Duos with Reiner Winterschladen (trumpet) and Tata Dindin (voice/Kora). In 2007 he started the trio series "die Kunst des Trios", experimenting with different concepts of playing within the classic format of piano, bass and drums. In the 90s, Lüdemann played and recorded with his group RISM, ranging from trio to septet. Special projects include DIWAN, an encounter with North African music, and TAGRA, a recording project of the French Cultural Center Djibouti with musicians from East Africa realised in 2008. Hans Lüdemann is performing regularly on international concert stages and festivals. Tours have led him around the world. His music is documented on more than 20 CDs, among them "Aphorisms" (1991), "the natural piano" (1994), "Futurism" (1997), "Kora meets piano" (2000), "African Variations" (2003) und "Touching Africa" (2006). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a composer, Lüdemann has worked for many instruments and settings, from piano music and chamber music to the orchestral works „Geschichte 2“ and „Verloren ins weite Blau“. Commissions for WDR, Hessischer Rundfunk, SWR, Ensemble Indigo, Film music. Lüdemann was appointed member of the federal German jury for the Villa Massimo/Rome prize in 2003. Hans Luedemann has been teaching Jazz piano, ensemble and composition at Musikhochschule Köln 1993 - 2008, the "Creative Jazz Workshop" at the European Academy Montepulciano since 2001 and is appointed "Cornell Visiting Professor" at Swarthmore College/PA (USA) for 2009/2010. He has been guest lecturer in many European and African universities and music schools.------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "one of the most expressive and original European pianists" (Jazz Podium)----------------- "one of the great German Jazz pianists" (Frankfurter Rundschau) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Luedemann TRIO IVOIRE Aly Keita - Chander Sardjoe --------------------------------- "Trio Ivoire shows that even in the 21st century, still discoveries are possible.“ (JAZZthetik, JulyAugust 2002) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unique trio uniting personal roots of Jazz/European/African/Indian influences into a contemporary sound of its own..... the label for that has yet to be invented. German pianist/composer Hans Luedemann teams up with Balaphon master Aly Keita from Ivory Coast and Dutch drummer Chander Sardjoe, who joined the group in 2007. Their new CD is released in the fall of 2009 on ENJA records, featuring singer and Mbira player Chiwoniso from Zimbabwe. The TRIO IVOIRE performed with her during their African tours in 2007 and 2008 at the HIFA festival in Harare. In 2008 the group was also part of the project TAGRA in Djibouti, cooperating with singers and musicians from several East African countries. The TRIO IVOIRE was founded in Abidjan/Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) in 1999, has toured in Europe and Africa and released two CDs "Trio Ivoire" (ENJA Records 2002) and "Touching Africa" (RISM/Alive 2006). The drummer on the two albums is Englishman Steve Argüelles, who played in the TRIO IVOIRE from 1999 - 2006. Special guest on the records and often on stage is Kora player/singer Tata Dindin. Sometimes singer Dobet Gnahore from Ivory Coast also performs with the group. The TRIO IVOIRE has performed at EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Music Meeting Nijmegen, Leverkusender Jazztage, Nancy Jazz Pulsations, Münchener Klaviersommer, HIFA Festival Harare, Bachfest Leipzig, Cologne Jazz Night, Soccer Worldcup Germany 2006, Afrika-Forum Bonn 2005, Jazzfietstour Groningen, Lucerna Theatre Prag, Maputo international Music Festival, Villa Massimo Rome, Old Library Hall Capetown, on tours commissioned by the Goethe institute and on many more festivals, concert stages and clubs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You could go to an entire festival and not see musicians enjoying themselves half as much as the three men that make up the Trio Ivoire..... Don't miss them."---------------- (Andrew Iliff, Hifalutin, Harare/Zimbabwe, May 2007).--------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Luedemann is a Steinway artist and uses Native Instruments Akoustik piano and Kontakt sampler --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Lüdemann/TRIO IVOIRE management/booking: Gwenn Puls - www.chefmecano.eu- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .. .. .. "THE HAPPY FUTURE OF JAZZ...In Lüdemann..s music current trends of electrification and globalisation can be found as well as diverse lines of tradition that could be indicated by such names as Bach, Cage, Coltrane or Makeba. That the simultaneous availibility of all information does not lead to an unintelligible mixture, but into a recognizable language of his own is one of the strengths of Lüdemanns music. That joy of physical motion has its place as well as intellectual puzzles, spontaneous improvisation as well as reflected composition, is another one. If the future of Jazz sounds like Hans Lüdemanns Futurisms, we can look forward to it happily and hopefully."-------------------------------- (FAZ - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)-------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRIO IVOIRE with Chiwoniso live in Bielefeld, January 13, 2010 - WDR live recording-------- http://www.wdr3.de/konzert/details/artikel/hans-luedemann-mit-trio-ivoire-feat-chiwoniso.html-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ..Hans Lüdemann - "schwarz in weiss" (solo)...... .. .. .. .. .. ..
