Harlem Parlour Music Club "It's Down Home Uptown" The Harlem Parlour Music Club—“a superb blend of singers, musicians, and song,” says respected artist/disc jockey Caroline Doctorow—is off to a fast start. Comprised of some of New York’s top talent, this collective has just released its initial recording, Salt of the Earth, which WUMB’s Barnes Newberry calls “an incredibly charming and delightful album brimming full of camaraderie and hope.” Only months earlier, HPMC issued A Harlem Parlour Christmas, which landed the group at No. 15 on FOLKDJ-L’s Top Artists of December 2009, compiled by KBCS’s Richard Gillman and based on over 13,000 airplays from 142 DJs. Salt of the Earth lays out HPMC’s essence: songs and instrumentation recalling Appalachian and other rural and traditional music is injected with the driving pulse and funk of a New York City rhythm section. Track 6, a cover of Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” may provide the most literal demonstration of this novel fusion of style and influence; but Salt of the Earth’s 10 other, original tracks are equally instilled with the collective’s passion, chemistry and renowned musicianship. As WFUV’s John Platt notes, “It's like the McGarrrigles sitting down to jam with Ollabelle." Great songs and passionate performances are the overriding concern at the Harlem Parlour. Less than two years old, HPMC’s mission is to gather together musicians, songwriters and various guests in an informal recording environment to capture complete band performances with minimal studio trickery. The Harlem Parlour Music Club’s core is comprised of Ann Klein and Andrew Carillo (guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, vocals); David Mansfield (dobro, mandolin, violin, pedal steel); Steve Count (electric and upright bass); Andy Burton (accordion, keyboards, vocals); Allison Cornell (violin, viola, vocals); Sammy Merendino (drums); Chris Tedesco (violin, vocals); Mary Lee Kortes (guitar, vocals); Darden Smith (guitar, vocals); and Tim Hatfield (recordist). Joining in on vocals are Amanda Homi, Elaine Caswell and Tabitha Fair. In addition, T-Bone Wolk (accordion), Jeff Golub (guitar, dobro), Robbie Kondor (harmonica) and Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (dulcimer) have also contributed greatly to the HPMC sound. HPMC’s members have performed and/or recorded with Bob Dylan, Sting, Cyndi Lauper, Hall & Oates, Joan Osborne, Shania Twain, Joe Jackson, Keith Richards, Billy Joel, Cameo, Steve Earle and many others. Harlem Parlour Music Club’s two albums, along with two documentary film scores including the Telly Award-winning Pearly’s Song, were produced by Sammy Merendino and Tim Hatfield in a Harlem townhouse built in 1892. The collective has also recorded at Cowboy Technical Services studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Harlem Parlour Music Club will perform at New York’s Living Room on April 13. The following day, they will appear on the respected NYC radio station WFUV. Videos for two Salt of the Earth tracks—“Runaway Train” and “Dyin’ to be Born Again”—can be seen at www.youtube.com/user/harlemparlourmusic.
