THE CHRISTMAS SONG THAT KEEPS ON GIVING ** CREATIVE TEAM HELPS HARLEM PRESERVATIONISTS & KATRINA VICTIMS.
As part of the 350th Harlem Anniversary Celebrations, Willex Brown, Jr. and Eric V. Tait, Jr., have joined forces with Diana Solomon Glover and David Easton to bring us “Melancholy Christmas” a
brand new Christmas Song being used to help the Harlem Preservation Foundation (HPF) and the New Orleans ACORN Katrina Relief effort.
Its a new, memorable Christmas Song that speaks to the issue of those not so fortunate among us who might need aid and comfort in the Holiday Season, being used to help a Harlem-based not-for-profit Historical Preservation organization as well as many of those still in need in the City of New Orleans. Not only does HPF have a percentage of ownership rights in “Melancholy Christmas” but HPF and ACORN, New Orleans will also share in the music download sales.
The purchaser of each download will know that (3-Cents) of every download-purchase of any version of the song will be donated each to HPF and ACORN, New Orleans. In the words of the President of Louisiana ACORN, Beulah Labostrie, “We are honored by your gesture. This is a wonderful Christmas gift of giving which demonstrates the brotherhood of men... as well as the indomitable human spirit. Thank you for thinking of us...”
Said Tait and Brown: “We thought this would be a great way to help highlight Harlem’s 350th birthday and also help others in need. We know that people like to help when they can, especially at Christmas time, and this is an easy, enjoyable way to do that. We ask that when they share this song with their friends after they’ve downloaded it, that they ask their friends to also download a copy and share it with another friend so it spreads virally and really becomes the song that keeps on giving.”
The last time Brown and Tait collaborated they came up with one of the most memorable and well-regarded audience favorites at Rosetta Lenoire’s AMAS! Repertory Theatre- the ‘50s-based Musical “Sh-Boom!” “Melancholy Christmas” is as fine a Holiday Song as any of the romantic ballads that made “Sh-Boom!” such an audience favorite.
This debut recording of “Melancholy Christmas” is sung by the multi-talented Diana Solomon Glover, with David Easton on keyboards. Diana’s outstanding vocal and spoken-word contributions have enhanced a number of Mr. Tait’s award-winning radio documentary works. “Melancholy Christmas” was recorded and mastered at Duke Markos Audio in New York City and is available at these Online Stores: iTUNES, Rhapsody, Napster, eMusic, GroupieTunes, Lala, Shockhound, Amazon MP3 and Amie Street.

WHAT IT IS
The Village of Harlem will celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2008. The Harlem Preservation Foundation (HPF) and Neighborhood Artists, Inc. (NA, Inc.) respectfully requests your support to make this anniversary celebration an extraordinarily memorable occasion. Our Primary Goal is to prominently re-imprint onto the national/international consciousness Harlem’s history and legacy as a major cultural center of music and art, film and theatre, literature and learning. A resultant corollary of this undertaking is the establishment of a Central Harlem Jazz/Cultural Historic District.
WHO WE ARE
The Harlem Preservation Foundation (HPF) was founded to help save and preserve Harlem’s rich historic and cultural heritage as well as support educational, economic, and cultural resources in the Harlem community. HPF has been involved in preservation efforts throughout Central Harlem, organizing volunteers, enlisting elected officials and community leaders, and marshaling community resources to preserve and enhance the Harlem community.
Founded in 1988, Neighborhood Artists, Inc. is a Harlem-based not-for-profit organization that provides services to homeless and indigent families, seniors and artists. Originally focused on providing support for local artists, the organization expanded its mission as a result of the drastic increase of homeless families and individuals in New York City. Currently, among Neighborhood Artists accomplishments is a 20 units permanent housing complex including offices and congregant space for ongoing counseling services including an intergenerational, creative arts program and workshops.
SOME HARLEM HISTORY
Harlem was originally built by enslaved Africans and early Dutch settlers. The enslaved and partially freed Africans built the roads and leveled the forests that led to the establishment of New Haarlem by themselves and the Dutch in 1658. Those enslaved blacks were in that area – as they were throughout New Netherlands – either as individually owned workers, or as members of the Dutch West India Company’s labor force. “According to the colonial documents, ground-breaking took place on August 14th, and a party was held on September 10th, after the village had been surveyed and staked out. The new road [Road to Haarlem] built by enslaved Africans – from New Amsterdam to New Haarlem – probably started in April or May of 1658.” (Chris Moore/Schomburg)
The “Atlantic Creoles” were of African descent, mixed with other races. They facilitated both interaction and communication between the Europeans and the Natives. The link is the Atlantic Basin: Europe to Africa, through the Caribbean to the Americas, and back to Europe. It is that African-rooted multi-cultural heritage, that African-Caribbean-American connection that we will also recognize and celebrate with this Project. This is as much an educational as it is a cultural and economic Project.
WHERE OUR CELEBRATION WILL BE
Primarily in Harlem/New York City, but also within other nationally and internationally connected communities that will collaborate for the festivties.
WHEN CELEBRATIONS WILL HAPPEN
April 2008 to October 2008 which will coincide with the commemoration of the start of construction of the new road from New Amsterdam to New Haarlem during the Spring of 1658 by enslaved Africans, and will end with commemoration of the celebration which was held when the Village of New Haarlem was officially surveyed and staked out in September of 1658.
WHY To ensure Harlem:
**Reclaims and maintains it’s rightful place, it’s history and it’s legacy as a major international cultural center
**Has an officially designated Central Harlem Jazz/Cultural Historic District.
**Receives a fitting high-profile precursor and lead-in to the planned 400th Anniversary Celebration in 2009 of Henry Hudson’s first sailing up the Mahicanituk – the waterway that would later become known as the Hudson River. It will provide the City and State of New York a longer celebration period, with a much broader, more culturally inclusive base which would enhance long-term tourism and economic development.
