Influences
Choral Music with a wide range of repetoire from gospel and pop to classical
Harmony was originally started about 10 years ago as a small group of 9 friends who used to perform a capella (unaccompanied). After a meeting between these friends was arrannged, they decided to expand their horizons and a new group was formed in February 2006 under the direction of Wendy Murphy who now acts as their Musical Director and Accompanist. It was decided that Harmony was to remain the groups name. The choir have now recently expanded and are growing from strength to strength in its present establishment of 18 members. The choir performs in any events such as, charity events, weddings, local concerts and any other functions subject to availability of course.
Since their formation, under the guidance of their Musical Director, they have improved greatly, worked extremely hard to produce a new, wide varied range of repertoire including, traditional welsh songs, pop songs, religious songs, songs from the shows and many more. Some of the choir’s favourites include Adiemus, an ethno-classical piece by Welsh Composer, Karl Jenkins and ‘May It Be’ which is the haunting melody sung by Enya from The Lord Of The Rings.
If you are interested in having Harmony for any function please do not hesitate to contact our Musical Director Wendy Murphy via e-mail at harmony_of_wales@hotmail.co.uk.
The Choir is very fortunate to have the young and talented Wendy Murphy who is definitely not a stranger to the stage in Maesteg. Wendy acts as both the Musical Director and Accompanist to this choir and she enjoys every minute of it.
Wendy started off as accompanist of Maesteg Comprehensive School Choir for three years, and in August 2000 became the accompanist of Côr Merched Cwm Llynfi, where she stayed until January 2006. With this choir Wendy went on a trip to France, took part in a festival in Germany and also had the pleasure of playing in a concert in the Houses of Parliament. She has also accompanied Maesteg Children’s Choir here and has played for them whilst on a trip in Germany. In June 2002 she also accompanied Côr Meibion Maesteg A’r Cylch to Torrevieja, Spain.
At the Moment, Wendy plays the Piano for four choirs and is kept very busy. The choirs include Harmony, a Ladies Choral Group and Cor Yr Hen Blwyf Male Voice in Maesteg. More recently, since March 2007, she has become the Accompanist of Bois Afan Male Voice choir and is the assistant accompanist for Côr Cymric Port Talbot Male Voice.
In February 2006, Wendy formed a new ladies vocal group in Maesteg ‘Harmony’ where she is the Musical Director and Accompanist. They have had numerous concerts throughout the year and have taken a trip to Cornwall to sing which was a highlight for the choir last year. She thoroughly enjoys playing for each of these choirs and hopes to continue this for many years to come.
Since forming this choir in February 2006, Wendy has done so much for the choir. As well as being in charge of Musical decision making, Wendy has found the time to design a new logo for the choir and has been trying to form lasting friendships with each of her other choirs by arranging joint concerts. Wendy has proved her worth many times over, and has earned the admiration of her chorus members with her continuing ability to add a special dimension to the choir.
Wendy has recently enjoyed a tour of Holland and Brussels with Port Talbot Cymric Male Voice Choir at the end of October 2007. The choir was invited out to celebrate the Liberation of the Welsh 53rd Regiment. They also had the pleasure of doing a concert with another choir in Hertsongenbosch which was a memorable evening. The week overall proved to be very successfull with numerous concerts and social events where all the choir had a great time.
