Born in Arusha, Tanzania in 1981 and raised in Kansas City, Mo., Harold O'Neal was 14 when he first sat down at a piano. After years of schooling at Kansas City's Paseo Academy of the Performing Arts, Harold enrolled at the Berklee College Of Music, where he studied jazz piano performance and theory. His education continued at the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Kenny Baron. His first professional work came at the age of 19 with jazz saxophonist Bobby Watson, performing in the U.S. and throughout Europe with a his group in 2000. While at Manhattan School of Music, Harold met jazz legend Andrew Hill who became not only a mentor but a personal friend as well. It was through Andrew Hill that Harold was introduced to Greg Osby in 2002. That lead to Harold holding down the piano on Greg’s 2003 Blue Note release, St. Louis Shoes, along with trumpeter Nicholas Peyton, bassist Bob Hurst, and drummer Rodney Green. In 2004 Harold appeared for the first time as a leader of his own group, The Harold O’Neal Quartet; the line-up for this first incarnation of the group included Greg Osby on saxophone, Jeff ‘Tain Watts on drums, and Matt Brewer on bass. In 2006 Harold was named a semifinalist in the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Competition, where he was introduced to Paolo Fazioli. The association with Fazioli Pianos resulted in an, as yet, unreleased solo album of standards and original compositons. In 2007, Greg Osby and Harold performed as a duo in memory of Andrew Hill; the performance is documented in the Boosey & Hawkes/Blue Note presentation entitled, An Evening of Jazz Masterworks. In 2007 Harold also appeared on Ahmed Alaadeen’s ASR release, The Beauty of It All. At the start of 2008 Harold again found himself playing with Bobby Watson. Bobby’s newest album on the Palmetto Label, From The Heart, features Harold on piano. The album was the most played title on jazz playlists across the country for nearly three months. The Harold O’Neal Quartet is resurfacing later this year in the studio with a new line-up featuring Jaleel Shaw on sax, Joe Sanders on bass, and Rodney Green on drums. They will be recording an album for Greg Osby’s new label, Inner Circle Music. In his career, Harold has performed with such artists as Elvin Jones, Bob Hurst, Vanessa Rubin, Kenny Garrett, Richard Davis, Nicholas Payton, Joe Chambers, Rodney Whitaker, Victor Lewis, Essiet Essiet, Gary Bartz, Paquito D'Rivera, Jimmy Heath, Roy Hargrove, Bobby Watson, Jeff ‘Tain Watts, Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, Greg Osby, Phil Upchurch, Marvin Smitty Smith, Curtis & Carmen Lundy and many others. Harold has also offered his talents to a variety of non-jazz artists, from soul singer Bilal to hip hop artist Bahamadia and Alex B of Pnuma Trio. The future only holds more promise for Harold as he continues to play his music for audiences around the world.
