Harry Cherrin is an American saxophonist and woodwind player currently living and performing in The Netherlands. Although primarily trained as a classical saxophonist, Harry's musical curiosity and versatility has led him to quickly become a valued member of the thriving Dutch experimental music scene, working frequently with improvisation and live electronics. He recently joined the Esquire Saxofoonkwartet, one of The Netherlands' most adventurous groups of its kind, and also is a member of:
Sonido 13 (electro-accoustic/minimal/ microtonal compositions and free improvisations with bass clarinettist Jason Alder)
Twombly (free improv duo with guitarist Jasper Stadhouders)
Bossas & Biertjes (Brazilian Jazz duo with Caio Amon, guitar)
He has also performed with the Syrene and Berlage saxophone quartets, Louie's Spaced Out Ensemble, The Magic Lantern Show Orchestra (improvised silent film scores), and Strange Loops (early Minimalist music).
Prior to coming to Amsterdam Harry spent several years as a freelance musician in Boston, MA, playing saxophone, clarinets and flute across the northeastern U.S. with groups such as The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), The Back Bay Quartet, The Boston Saxophone Quartet, Portland Symphony, Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony, New Hampshire Music Festival, Indian Hill Symphony, Harvard Group for New Music, as well as a variety of solo and chamber music recitals. During this time he also collaborated with Boston-area composers on several new saxophone works, in addition to teaching a large studio of young woodwind players in Wellesley, MA.
Harry received degrees with honors from the University of Delaware and New England Conservatory, and his teachers have included Kenneth Radnofsky, Charles Salinger, Marshall Taylor and Vincent Marinelli. He recently became the first American saxophonist to earn a master's degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, under the tutelage of renowned Dutch saxophonist Arno Bornkamp. His studies, funded by grants from The Frank Huntington Beebe Fund (US) and the HSP Huygens Scholarship (NL), included a catalogue/study method titled, "The Improvising Classical Saxophonist" as well as classes on Improvisation, Live Electronics and Carnatic rhythmic techniques.
When not playing or listening to music, Harry enjoys Belgian beer, dogs, and writing about himself in the third person.
I also give private saxophone, clarinet and flute lessons to all ages and experience levels, in either English or Dutch. Please contact me to arrange a lesson: harrycherrin (at) hotmail (dot) com
