The Harry Fox Agency (HFA) is the premier U.S. mechanical licensing agent. Founded in 1927 by The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), we issue mechanical licenses and collect royalties on our affiliated publishers' behalf. The licenses we issue allow the reproduction and distribution of musical compositions on CDs, ringtones, Internet downloads, and other configurations.
Are you recording a cover version for your record? You'll need a mechanical license. If you're making less than 2500 copies of your recording, you can obtain a mechanical license through HFA Songfile. Go here to learn how. Since we represent over 1.7 million songs from almost 35,000 publishers, there's a good chance you'll be able to find what you're looking for. If you're making more than 2500 copies, you will need to open an HFA Licensing Account. You can download those forms here.
