Harry Hunks was founded in Helsinki, Finland, in the turn of the Millennium by Matti Eräsaari (vocals, guitar), Olli Moilanen (percussion, backing vocals) Mattis patrilateral crosscousin Antti Ahokas (keyboards) and Jaakko Laine (bass). Jaakko quit the band in 1999, which brought about the most experimental or unconventional phase in the bands
relatively conventional history. First, he was replaced with Ollis left hand and an analogue synth (which caused problems in the rhythm section), then by Ollis younger brother (which caused problems at home), until Antti's left hand and a Rhodes stage piano took up the task in 2001. Pekka Kastari relieved Antti's left hand early in 2003. Nowadays Harry Hunks is lead by Antti and Matti having Pekka and Petri on the side. Lineup for live performances depends on feelings at the moment and also on the size of the current venue. Many skillful musicians are often at hand to join the guys on stage.
If there is a message or agenda in the music of Harry Hunks, then
that too, is pretty conventional: to make their listeners feel something; to
make them smile with the happier pop songs, or reach out for someone to
hold during the moodier songs. Sometimes the band fails even this
miserably; making people melancholy with its attempts at cheeriness or
making them smile at the bands melancholy pathos. But that, too,
amounts to making people feel something.
Harry Hunks has gigged throughout Finland and their records have
been played by national and local radio stations. Both records and gigs
have received favourable reviews in the Finnish music media.
Harry Hunks is a member of the loose indie pop collective Marsu on
paras which organises clubs and events, releases records etc. Marsu on
paras also includes members from bands such as ultrasport, The Rollstons
and Red Carpet. For the past few years these bands have been prominent
among the current Finnish indie scene, gaining recognition outside
Finland as well.
