Hi, we're Hart2Yu. Our name comes from a combination of our own name's (oooOOOohhh creative!) We are made up of 2 members; Ami Yu on vocals and occasional piano, and Sheona Urquhart on Piano and occasional vocals. The songs that are posted up were recorded many years ago in the most professional of studios (aka Ami's kitchen), a better recording will hopefully appear soon!!! (with much much MUCH more impressive piano playing on Sheona's behalf...)
HISTORY of HART2YU
Hart2Yu first began in 2003 with two students of a small private baptist girls school, Ami Yu and Sheona Urquhart. Both girls, playing active parts of the school's musical scene, including leads in the musicals 'Sweet Charity' and 'The King and I', percussion and brass in the Senior Orchestra, and as altos in Senior Choir and Senior Madrigals, joined together to form an unnamed duet.
Their first song, "Taisetsuna", meaning "precious" or "important", was recorded along with their double piano instrumental "Without Words" and short ballad, "Music Box". The first 2 attempts of recording were both failures, as both girls were untrained with sound technology, but on the 3rd attempt, a CD was made, even though the sound quality was poor. No sooner had they finally finished this draft CD, an opportunity to play their songs on 3CR community radio appeared. But even though they'd managed to overcome the problems of recording, they still had no name.
The original idea was "Eletrik i-Shadow", but the title seemed too radical and bold for the subtle sounds of their songs. So after rummaging through ideas, some including jokes of "Chicken Salt" (named after a habit that they eat chicken salt fries at every rehearsal) and other random noises, Hart2Yu was finally created. "Hart", from Sheona's last name, "Yu" from Ami's, and the 2, representing their duality. A convenient name, which also then came to represent the heartfelt lyrics and harmonies of their pieces that reached out from them, to their listeners.
Now that the final obstacle had been overcome, Hart2Yu was officially played on radio, with Ami representing the two on the show and introducing their band to the many listeners. Although just a premature duet, Hart2Yu had been allowed a very good start.
Over time, the completion of several more songs had occurred and Hart2Yu was gaining more recognition across the internet community due to Ami's web promotion on her own journal. From friends to friends, then their friend's friends, Hart2Yu, known better as just H2Y, acquired fans internationally through this method.
Then, the first ever Hart2Yu performance of ".s.a.n.d." was given at their school's Senior Assembly, where they received a standing ovation and further recognition for their talent. This then lead to gigs representing Kilvington Girls Grammar, although the girls played their own songs, and a few more performances for events such as the Music Prize 2003 and the graduation Speech Night.
However, towards the end of the year and the beginning of the next, due to both girls needing to focus on their studies, Hart2Yu was on hiatus for 2 months, before they received an invitation from 3CR radio to play at "Musical Outbreak 2004" amongst many other talented bands, and also do a live performance at the station, and another gig on the fashionable and busy shopping district, Chapel Street.
The duet's distinct style distinguishes them from other piano and vocals artists such as Delta Goodrum and Norah Jones, as the girls explore and play with the many sounds their accoustic limits will allow them to have, refusing to play music that is repetitive or similar to other pieces they've written; Another reason for their continuously growing fanbase, even as an unsigned band.
However, currently, Hart2Yu is again being taken on and off hiatus, the girls trying to find time to rehearse and practise whenever they get the chance to in between both their busy schedules filled with studying and other commitments.
Although the wish to complete their CD, titled "Opus 13", has not yet been fulfilled, this doesn't prevent either of them from giving up their dreams. Several un-released songs have already been written, and with word of mouth, and the help of the internet, Hart2Yu will continue to gain recognition.
