    Hart's Interests
GeneralWriting (obviously), Arrested Development, My Name is Earl, old music (new stuff sucks), comics, movies, Swinging London, dogs, foreign movies from 1945 to 1980 (I'm taking the coolest class). Old books and magazines. I like old things because you can steal all sorts of stuff for your writing and nobody will ever know, because they're all mesmerized by Lindsey Lohan and the crap on TV.
MusicThe Beatles and classic rock. Prime cheese from the 70s like ELO (Time-Life series is the BEST!). Some 80s and 90s. Not anything that came out when I was in high school 'cause I hated it. I am just getting into jazz and like Charlie "Bird" Parker, Theolonious Monk, Miles Davis and Bud Powell. I want to like classical, but every time I listen to it, I fall asleep.
MoviesMy favorite movies, in no particular order: Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shining (when I can stand to watch it--here's a really cool essay about it), La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, The 400 Blows, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood (yes, I am taking a course, "Foreign Date Movies of the Postwar Period"), Animal House, Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Big Lebowski, Jaws, Squirm, some David Cronenberg movie where there are parasites in an apt building
TelevisionArrested Devlopment, My Name is Earl, The Simpsons (obviously). When I'm home I like to watch a lot of documentaries, but at school, my brain is too fried.
BooksThe Onion, America: The Book, Barry Trotter, Blarnia (this is only available in England but it's really funny), anything by Dave Barry, anything by Robert Benchley, My Life and Hard Times by James Thurber. FRESHMAN (with strong reservations, since it's supposed to be about me, but it's frequently wrong.)
HeroesMy dad, who is currently serving time in a German jail. (I'm not kidding.) Buddha. Martin Luther King. FDR. Martin Niemoller and Sophie Scholl. Walter Payton (even though I never saw him play). Jesus' crazy uncle Goob, who has been lost to history but came up with most of the ideas.

   Hart's Blurbs
About me:
I'm currently finishing up my sophomore year at Stutts University (of course you've heard of that), living with my roommate Peter in temporary college housing, which is even worse than it is normally--and since I'm in Dacron, that's saying something. Peter, who as I type this is currently raping a sock monkey, has just been crowned Beat-Off King of Great Littleton. Peter and I run The Cuckoo, which is our school's humor magazine. If you don't like it, it's all his fault, especially the drawrings.
Who I'd like to meet:
The Beatles, Conan O'Brien, Piet Mondrian, John Cleese, Aubrey Beardsley, Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, Egon Schiele, Lord Stutts, Hermione Granger (oh, the things I would do to her)

Hey, Hart-

My mind being what it is, I don't know how I ended up on your friends list, but, heck, I'll make the best of it.

I shall utilize the accumulated experience of decades of listening and working in a music store (74-75) and playing music in many styles to give you some suggestions of music to seek out.

You are on the right track, for sure. Let me throuw out some names. Ellington and Basie are good. Louis Jordan is good. Weather Report is good. Wayne Shorter is very good. Anything by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ry Cooder is good. Bix Beiderbecke. Charlie Hunter. Joni Mitchell. Burt Bacharach, if you listen in the right way. Barney Kessel is stunning. David Lindley, too. More Monk. You can't have too much Thelonius Monk. Art Tatum. Fats Waller. Sonny Rollins. On the other hand, Steely Dan, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Paul Butterfield's Blues Band, Steve Miller's Blues Band (before he became pop.) Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks. Randy Newman, especially his first two albums. I could go on.

Get the vibe of Motown. Maybe that Time/Life series gets into it. Explore the wonder of surf guitar music. Don't ignore things other might not even take seriously, like novelty tunes. My three favorite music groups used to be early Neil Young (and Buffalo Springfield), Martin Mull, and the Bonzo Doo Dah Band. They still bring a smile to my face.

For the true origins of jazz guitar, Charlie Christian.

For classic jazz, check the Modern Jazz Quartet.

For classic classical music, I can't help you. It puts me to sleep, too.

If you're interested, I can perhaps offer some more clues. If not, well, that's cool too.

Take care.
