Food gives us energy. Without food, people get tired and can’t learn, play, grow or work. That’s why it’s important to make sure that everyone has food to eat!
Hungry people need your help...
“What can I do?”
Run a food drive for Harvest Texarkana
Talk to your teacher, troop leader, or sports coach about organizing a food drive for Harvest Texarkana. If you collect more than 50 pounds, Harvest Texarkana will pick up the food you give and deliver it to hungry people all over East Texas and Lower Arkansas. In 2008, public school children donated over 60,000 pounds of food to Harvest Texarkana. How much is 60,000 pounds? That's heavier than 100 grizzly bears!
Collect food for Harvest Texarkana at an event
At your school or with your troop or sports team, hold an art show, sports tournament, talent show or music concert for City Harvest. Instead of charging money for people to see the show, ask for cans or boxes of food at the door.
Raise money for Harvest Texarkana
Have a bake sale at your school. Sell your old toys at a yard sale organized by parents in your neighborhood. Wash cars with your girl or boy scout troop. Give the money you collect to Harvest Texarkana. When you do chores around the house, collect money for each chore you do, and donate it to Harvest Texarkana.

Here are some of the places that get food from Harvest Texarkana:
Food pantries. A food pantry is like the cupboard in your parents’ kitchen. People who work at the food pantries put food into bags. Then they give the bags to the people who need food and can cook it at home. They can use the food to make two or three meals for their family. Food that usually goes in pantry bags includes: peanut butter, bread, rice, pasta, tuna fish, beans, juice.
Soup kitchens. A soup kitchen is a place for hungry people to eat a hot meal. Soup kitchens serve a lot more than soup. Chefs cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or sometimes all three for the people who come to the kitchen. People eat the food at the soup kitchen.
Homeless shelters. A homeless shelter is a place to have a bed for the night for someone who has no place to sleep. Some shelters also have soup kitchens so they can feed people too.
Senior centers. Elderly people sometimes move into special houses or apartment buildings where there are nurses and other people to help take care of them. Senior centers often include food pantries or soup kitchens, where some senior citizens can get food.
Afterschool centers. Kids go to afterschool centers – you guessed it – after school. Adults at the afterschool centers take care of the kids until their parents come to pick them up. Since kids are usually hungry after school, they also serve snacks.

Approximately 800,000 pounds of food were distributed by Harvest in 2007
Harvest Texarkana’s BackPack Program for needy children supplies underprivileged children with backpacks full of food for each weekend and school holiday. We are currently serving children from 3 school districts and six campuses. Nearly 400 children benefited from this unique program during the 2006-2007 school year.
Harvest Texarkana’s services allow area soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, after school programs and other food assistance programs to be good stewards of their limited resources. Member agencies pay a small shared maintenance fee for the food they receive from Harvest Texarkana. This helps to defray some of the overhead, transportation expenses and frozen food storage fees associated with distributing over three quarters of a million pounds of food. The shared maintenance fee means that agencies can get 10 times as much food for their money at the food bank rather than paying retail or wholesale prices.
Truckloads of food are donated from all over the country. Many times the product is donated as a result from over-runs or excess inventory.
Agencies can choose from more than 250 different items and are allowed to order as often as they choose.
Who I'd like to meet: Agencies and Churchs that are interested in utilizing the services Harvest Texarkana can offer.
Volunteers for warehouse work, creative newsletters, mailing, general office work, and vehicle maintenance.
People, Corporations and Foundations that wish to make donations, memorials, or leave a legacy for Harvest Texarkana.
AlphaGraphics is trying to raise awareness that local food pantries are running low. Some are reporting their supplies are 30% less then they should be due to increase demands. Please help me spread the word about this and check out http://cause.alphagraphics.com to find the nearest food shelter near you where you can drop off food. Every little bit can help!
Thanks for your friendship! May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and love. It is there for each and every one of us.
Have a warm and pleasant week! Your friend, Dennis Vaughn
