After Soundgarden wrapped up their near-yearlong tour in support of Badmotorfinger in 1992, the bandmembers took some time off. Just before sessions for their classic Superunknown began, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron decided to record some songs for fun with local Seattle friends, under the name Hater. Included in this ad-hoc band were ex-Monster Magnet guitarist John McBain, singer Brian Wood (brother of the late-Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood), and Devilhead bassist John Waterman. Those expecting a Soundgarden -esque hard rock album were caught off guard by Hater's penchant for garage rock and classic rock sounds, as evidenced by a rocking cover of Cat Stevens' "Mona Bone Jakon," as well as the originals "Who Do I Kill?," "Lion and Lamb," "Down Undershoe," "Tot Finder," and "Sad McBain." Although the band released just this one recording, McBain, Shepherd, and Cameron would re-group a few years later under the different moniker Wellwater Conspiracy, releasing the exceptional Declaration of Conformity in 1997.
Songs from Hater
Mona Bone Jakon, Who Do I Kill, Tot Finder, Lion Finder, Lion and Lamb, Roadside, Down Undershoe, Circles, Putrid, Blisteres, and Sad McBain.
There was a second album released called the 2nd
This is the info I have for it...
Hater's the 2nd is the long awaited follow-up to the classic underground Soundgarden side project from 1994. The new CD exemplifies a barrage of dark, psychedelic rock songs that expands on the sounds of the debut using studio experimentation reminiscent of Arthur Lee, The Pretty Things, The Minutemen and Eno. A decade in wait, the 2nd was recorded as a series of demos in 1995 the musical foundation includes Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden, Brotherhood of The Electric, Wellwater Conspiracy), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Wellwater Conspiracy), and Alan Davis (Mark Lanegan Band), with guest appearances by John Mcbain (Monster Magnet, Wellwater Conspiracy), Brian Wood (Devilhead), Bill Rieflin (Ministry, The Blackouts, REM) and Greg Keplinger (Red Dress, Stone Gossard Band). The 2nd restores the seminal players' slots in sonic history and marks the return of Ben Shepherds inimitable songs to record and stage.
Thirteen songs: try, downpour at mt angel, curtis bly, whatsever, zombie hand, wish on, all good, uncontrolled, otis & mike, fever saint, alcorokic, between two fires, walk alone.

Anyone looking for some live Hater footage, check out the magazine TVeye (www.tveyemagazine.com). It's a DVD magazine, and in issue #4 they have one live song (circles) from a recent performance at the Knitting Factory, and about 5 minutes of interviews. The magazine is great if you like any of the other bands on the cover too.
