Since the Hausmann Quartet’s formation in the summer of 2004 at the LyricaFest music festival in New Jersey, they have been acquiring a reputation as one of the great young quartets performing today. Praised for their charismatic playing and “biting, lyrical substance,” the quartet made their debut with the Lyrica Boston Chamber Music Players in a performance of the Mendelssohn Octet.
As part of the Norfolk Festival, the Hausmann Quartet worked closely with members of the Vermeer, Tokyo, and Keller quartets. They were quartet-in-residence at the 2007 Blossom Music Festival and will perform at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and Music@Menlo during the summer of 2008, along with the privilege of being invited as one of several quartets to participate in the Emerson Quartet’s International Workshop at Stony Brook.
The Hausmann Quartet has frequently appeared on the Lyrica Boston Chamber Music Series and has most recently given concerts at the Longy School of Music, Columbus Museum of Art and the Ludwig Recital Hall at Kent State University. Outreach venues throughout the Northeast include the Braintree and Dover Public Libraries (MA) and the Wilson School in Mountain Lakes (NJ), where they established a residency which brings creative musical programs to children with special needs. As part of “Live Music Now” the Hausmann Quartet has worked annually with the International Music Foundation to present a children’s concert series for public schools in the Chicago area.
As enthusiastic advocates for new music, the Hausmann Quartet worked closely with student composers in the Longy Preparatory School during the 2005-2006 seasons. In 2006, the quartet collaborated with composer John Howell Morrison in preparation for the east-coast premiere of his work, Hard Weather Makes Good Wood for string quartet and tape. More recently, the Hausmann Quartet collaborated with Egyptian musicologist and composer, Halim El-Dabh, for the world-premiere of The Pomegranate Concerto for string quintet and alto saxophone.
Upon completion of Lyrica Boston’s Young Artist Residency, the Hausmann Quartet relocated to Kent State University, where they currently serve as teaching assistants to the Miami String Quartet. Collectively, the quartet has been mentored by groups such as the Miami, Emerson, St. Lawrence, Tokyo, Vermeer, and Keller quartets. They have also played for members of the Juilliard, Ying, Orion, and Takacs quartets. Individually, they have performed with such legendary artists as Kim Kashkashian, Paul Katz, Joseph Silverstein, Ronald Thomas, Charles Castleman, Joseph Robinson, Steven Ansell, Victor Rosenbaum, Laura Bossert and Terry King. The Hausmann Quartet is represented by Marilyn Gilbert Artist Management (www.mgam.com).
