One in three teenagers will experience violence in a dating relationship. It occurs anytime one partner tries to maintain power and control over the other through any kind of physical, verbal or mental abuse. Dating violence affects people of all economic, racial and social lines. Most victims are young women who are also at higher risk for serious injury.
HAVEN is a nationally recognized non-profit leader in Oakland County that helps victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse regain control of their lives through support services. We believe all people have a right to violence-free lives and relationships.
Abuse and violence should not be tolerated or condoned. These acts have a devastating effect on victims, and HAVEN's aim is to eliminate root causes of abuse. Through continued education, we hope to work toward the prevention of physical and sexual violence of all individuals.
Early warning signs that your date may eventually become abusive include:
Extreme jealousy
Mood Swings
Controlling behavior
Alcohol and drug use
Explosive anger and/or verbal abuse
Isolation you from friends and family
Violent threats
Help is available! Remember that no one deserves to be abused or threatened. If you or someone you know is involved in an abusive relationship, call HAVEN's crisis hotline at 877.922.1274 to talk to someone who can help.
