About me:

I am a happily married mom to my two beautiful children, Leilani and Michael. I am an English teacher at Rancho HS. When I am not doing all that, I enjoy other things. I read a variety of books, write poetry and short story, and just hang out. I love to blog, you can visit it by clicking here. I also love my cell phone and laptop as if they were part of my family!

Who I'd like to meet:

I'd love to meet Maya Angelo and Toni Morrison. If I could go back into time, I would have loved to meet William Faulkner, Truman Capote, William Shakespeare, Willa Cather, and other great literary artists. I'd also love to meet the many different artists of the Harlem Renaissance era. If you are a new person to me, I'd like to meet you, too! However, if you are all about telling me "I know how you can get a free [insert whatever is the new scam these days]", please do not bother to click the "Add Me". If you are trying to tell me "Hey! I saw your profile, and I think you are hot. Let's chat sometime!", then do not bother hitting "Add Me". Obviously you DIDN'T read my profile - I am married. If you are selling, giving away free stuff, a band that is desperate for friends and I didn't seek you out, turn away now. I will just hit DENY anyways.

Interests

  • General

I love reading a variety of books, photography, digital scrapbooking, writing poetry and short stories, and meeting new people. I'd say I would love to work on making world peace accessible and homeless and the hungry obsolete, but that all cannot be achieved by one person. However, I am an advocate in volunteering and do enjoy doing some community service. It keeps a person humble, try it sometime! I have this newfound interest in being good all the time. Somehow, that devious side of me still wants to peep out every now and then. It does come in handy when needed!
  • Music

Anything with a good beat. Mostly Ambient, Trance, Techno, Eurodance, some Ska and Emo, and of course Hip Hop and R & B. I'll even tolerate some country music, as long as it is new school! Seriously, though, I will listen to almost anything! I am not too picky as long as it isn't degrading women, posing people in a bad light (unless it is man-bashing! So just kidding....), and is of some kind of positive influence. Happy music = Happy Karlana! Just a reminder: If you are a band, don't bother asking me to add you. If I was into your music, you'd be on my A-List already! I do have this newfound love for an artist. Her name is Ingrid Michaelson, very mellow and low key. I am waiting to see if she will appear anywhere near Las Vegas next year so I can see her live.
  • Movies

I will watch anything that is funny and romantic, and sometimes scary and on the sci-fi tip. Do you have any suggestions for good movies? You have to tell me because I am finding myself going on this long road of romantic comedies, and it is getting pretty depressing. I need some happy, HA-HA, gut-busting hilarious movies!
  • Television

Alright, I have to admit that I watch the following: Bionic Woman, Everybody Loves Raymond, Sex and the City, Friends, CSI, the HG channel, and my HBO on Demand. However, I am finding myself gravitating back to the old CSI:Las Vegas shows since Sara Sidle is no longer on the show. [sniff, sniff. tear, tear] Am a fan of Heros? Not really... Seriously, reality shows are getting REALLY old, and I am not finding anything else new on the TV anything of the great interest critics claim those new shows to be. Are there any new shows that are good to watch this season?
  • Books

My current book list consists of A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilted Planet, Many Waters, An Acceptable Time, Night, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Beloved, The Freedom Writers Diary, The Hours, Stones from the River, Me and Mr. Darcy, Secret Sisters, The Manny, Whistling in the Dark, The Cotton Queen, The Breakfast Club, The Bell Jar, Wuthering Heights, Heart of Darkness, Lovely Bones
  • Heroes

My biggest hero is my mother. She still teaches me to this day, even though her presence isn't among the rest of us. She was a loving, caring, and compassionate woman. She helped many people along her journey in life, and I believe this is where I get my yearning to help those along my journey in life. She helped me realize that life is truly no box of chocolates, but you can make brownies along the way. Actually, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, well - you get the idea. Hearing the tales of her life at my age growing up, moving out, and having my own life, she taught me that EVERYONE has ups and downs in life, but most have more downs than ups in their 20s. To this day, her guidance has helped me press on in school and my career. She has always told me being a teacher would be my calling. Mothers are right most of the time!
