  • Bio

HAYLA Biography Drawing musical inspiration from a multi-cultural background that includes ancestry from Egypt, Greece, Yemen and Spain, multi-talented singer and performer Hayla brings a dynamic dash of exotica to the global dance scene as she boldly declares: "I'm Free." Beyond her powerhouse vocals and infectious beats, her debut single, produced by Hayla with her co-writers Zarotek and Gemini explodes with a Middle Eastern fusion vibe that includes her own unique rhythmic touches on an Arabic hand drum known as the doumbek. "I'm Free" is set for worldwide release 2012 in a package that includes remixes by a host of top tier names: Ralphi Rosario, Mixin Marc, Mike Rizzo's Funk Generation, Super Stylers, DJ Bam Bam, Dave Matthias, Massi and DeLeon, KlubJumpers, among others. "Via my voice, listeners will be able to hear my heart," says Hayla. "The music is a unique hybrid of influences that come naturally to me, but listeners will also relate to the lyrics, which I wrote after I found out the man I had been with for several years had cheated on me. There's lots of pain in the beginning of the song, but ultimately I come to the point where I'm feeling the happiness of being free from a relationship that wasn't what I thought it was." Like all intensely creative artists who explore many different avenues before finding their true voice as an artist, Hayla's professional career to this point matches the eclecticism of her dance music. She secured her first label deal in her native Middle East at 17 and quickly scored a #1 chart hit. Moving to U.S. from the Middle East in 2005, she lived first in Miami and then settled in Los Angeles, where she began working with a unique array of musicians and producers. Over the past few years, Hayla has toured the U.S. with the Arabic group, the Yuval Ron Ensemble; was lead singer for the Jewish Symphony; sang at comedian Wanda Sykes' wedding; and recorded vocals for several projects by Academy Award winning composer James Horner ("Titanic," "Avatar"). Her single "Paulina," sung in both Spanish and English is charting in New Jersey by Bill Rickets' Record Pool and hit #9 on the Record Pool Chart. Growing up in the Middle East, Hayla was blessed with a deeply musical family. Her grandfather, a cantor, taught music at his own conservatory music school, and her mother, grandmother and great grandmother were all singers. In spite of that, as a very young child, her love of animals sparked early dreams of becoming a veterinarian. A near fatal family car accident changed everything. Trapped in the backseat, she prayed and told God that if she survived, she would use her vocal gifts and sing for the rest of her life. After being in a coma for six months, Hayla—making good on her promise and counting her survival as a miracle—began singing and never stopped. She was always the star at family functions and formed a band and sang Middle Eastern music with two cousins when she was 12. She later learned to play the doumbek, a hand drum she calls her "secret weapon." Hayla cites numerous artists from a multitude of genres as big influences on her musical development. In addition to mainstream artists like Celine Dion, Missy Elliot and Alicia Keys, she also loves Gypsy Kings and is a huge fan of Egyptian singer Um Kul Tum. Her love of dance and house music began at age ten when her single mother, a gay woman who would partake in musical activities connected to the gay and lesbian culture, began taking Hayla to big rave events. They continued to attend these concerts throughout Hayla's teen years. "I loved the image of the people I was spending time with," she says. "It's a community full of fun and beautiful people. Listening to so much dance music, I knew I would one day begin recording as a dance artist, but mix it with all of the other styles I love—just as I always did singing while I was growing up. 'I'm Free' is a great way to introduce myself as an artist because you can hear subtle Middle Eastern influences that are so much a part of who I am. It's the little nuances that set it apart from most of the other dance music you hear these days, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share it. I'm so happy that my vision for what I wanted my life to be is now being realized. I love working with the team of people who are helping me make it happen. Sometimes it's a matter of having just the right angels around you at the perfect time." Hayla will be breaking onto the Billboard Dance Top 50 Charts with "I'm Free" and is currently preparing her promo tour for early 2012.
