Since 2001 Ipswich rock band Hayze have been writing, recording, gigging, promoting and enjoying the ups and downs of being in a hard working 'unsigned' band. The current line-up consists of Pete Thompson (vocals/guitar), Jim Newstead (drums/bvox) and Paul Backhouse (bass/bvox).
“I’ve been in the band from day one and it’s always been my main focus.” says Pete, who writes the majority of the songs “As a three piece we are finding we have much more space to play with in the music and we are looking at how to utilise it – not only live but on record. Even re-working old songs has brought out something new, whether it be the structure or the feel of the song”.
Hayze already have quite an impressive catalogue of releases which includes 1 album, 4 EPs and 3 singles. Making Plans, which was recorded at Dan Hawkins (The Darkness/Stone Gods) Leeders Farm Studio and Produced by Dan and Nick Brine (Stone Roses, Bruce Springsteen, KT Tunstall), reached 192 in the UK singles chart in December 2008 without any backing from a label, publisher or PR company.
As well as working hard in the studio Hayze have gigged all over the country and are regulars on the London circuit playing at The Barfly, Betsy Trotwood, Purple Turtle, The Garage and Dublin Castle to name but a few. Indeed it is their live show that has won them accolades from the Industry. “They are a balls to the wall rock and roll band….there aren’t many English rock bands making this sort of music at the moment” enthused Pete Maher from Topfloor Music who, along with Hayze, has worked with Coldplay and Razorlight.
Early 2009 saw the band begin working with a top Producer who has worked with some of the music greats including The Jam, Primal Scream and Thin Lizzy. “We are rehearsing and recording demos of new songs that we will look to release later in the year. We are really pleased with how things are going and it's definetely taking our sound on to a different level”.
It’s easy to see why Hayze have received such positive reviews of their music; they produce big powerful rock songs with melodies that will take up residence in your head forever! This is something that has been picked up by the press too. Logo Magazine stated that “This band will soon be a fixture on the nations airwaves” and Rhythm and Booze, an on-line webzine at the forefront of new and independent bands, were compelled to ask “Why are this band still unsigned?”

Oscar Wilde once stated that “I always like to know everything about my new friends, and nothing about my old ones”. Of course there is a waspish humour within such a remark but it also focuses upon one of life’s great delights: New stuff. New stuff.
