   HB 1403/ DREAM Act's Blurbs
About me:
This project documentary was started by a Texas Southern University student in 2001 when he was part of a group of students that concentrated in raising awareness on immigrant students and their right to an education. He was then joined by a fellow student from the University of Houston as they shared a common interest to tell the stories of those that have not been heard. House Bill 1403 (Now known as Senate Bill 1528) was passed in July of 2001 thus giving path to thousands of immigrant students the opportunity to attend colleges and universities across Texas paying in-state tuition. Until recently, House Bill 1403 became threatened by the backlash of the right wing and the anti-immigrant sentiment. We intend to educate others by telling the stories of students that are deeply affected by the issue. The students that each day face the adversities of the system. The students that fight back the system and exceed all the expectations but are then faced with a wall: not being able to use their degrees. The DREAM Act is a nonpartisan piece of legislation that was introduced to the senate in 2001 and since then continues to pend in the hands of congressman. The DREAM Act is an amendment that would grant a means of legalization for immigrant students across the country under several requirements: must have graduated from a high school or college, must have lived inside the United States for at least five years, must have entered the country when they were fifteen years or younger, show good moral character among others. The DREAM Act is the promising ray of light for many who now hold college and graduate degrees and ready to lead a career, but are unable to because of their status in the country.

To whom it may concern,
We folks here at the Word Around Town Poetry Tour think tank would like to invite you to nominate your favorite poet, and this could be you too, to participate in the upcoming tour the 3rd week of July. We need at least 3 samples of their/you work to be reviewed and up for a vote. We are only going to vote on two new feature poets but we will invite new guest poets as well.
The selection of our WAT poets, as some of you may know by attending our past tours, is of the highest caliber of quality and diversity, we are very open- minded and experimental, but we are also elitist pricks. And because we are elitist pricks, we are keeping many of our O.G. poets, because we love them and the public loves them, and the tour was created for them and the public.
Our tour promotes the diversity and poetry that thrives in the humid swamp city of Houston, and the places that house this poetry. We celebrate the music, the art, and the spirit that inspires such poetry. We have guests from all over who share that spirit, this year for example we are uniting forces with The Frontline Tour, who will bring us more poetry and music. Many of the participant poets are also involved in their communities, some are activists, some are organizers, some are intellectuals, or lovers, and some are rebels without a cause, and yea, we have a couple of assholes.
With that being said, we invite you to be a part of the WAT this year, either by performing with us, or by being a spectator. Either way, see you in July.
Love,
WAT folks

We've now had 5 years of lies about Iraq: 9/11, WMD's, freedom. The real reasons were oil, profiteering, fascism. Not just Bush, but the news media, most of congress, and all who remain silent. And now they'll use fear to quash dissent. It's nothing new -- it's been going on for ages. War, poverty, ecocide, arrogant bullying --they're all from greed and fear, which come from ignorance. ♥ But it's not too late -- we can still learn to make peace. Talk with people. Love, Eric

The Martin Luther King You Don't See on TV
by Jeff Cohen & Norman Solomon
(Wednesday, April 4, 2007)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"In 2007, in this nation of immense wealth, the White House and most in Congress continue to accept the perpetuation of poverty. They fund foreign wars with "alacrity and generosity," while being miserly in dispensing funds for education and healthcare and environmental cleanup."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's become a TV ritual: Every year on April 4, as Americans commemorate Martin Luther King's death, we get perfunctory network news reports about "the slain civil rights leader."

The remarkable thing about these reviews of King's life is that several years - his last years - are totally missing, as if flushed down a memory hole.

What TV viewers see is a closed loop of familiar file footage: King battling desegregation in Birmingham (1963); reciting his dream of racial harmony at the rally in Washington (1963); marching for voting rights in Selma, Alabama (1965); and finally, lying dead on the motel balcony in Memphis (1968).

An alert viewer might notice that the chronology jumps from 1965 to 1968. Yet King didn't take a sabbatical near the end of his life. In fact, he was speaking and organizing as diligently as ever.

Almost all of those speeches were filmed or taped. But they're not shown today on TV.

Why?

It's because national news media have never come to terms with what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for during his final years.

In the early 1960s, when King focused his challenge on legalized racial discrimination in the South, most major media were his allies. Network TV and national publications graphically showed the police dogs and bullwhips and cattle prods used against Southern blacks who sought the right to vote or to e
