HB 1403/ DREAM Act's Blurbs |
About me:
This project documentary was started by a Texas Southern University student in 2001 when he was part of a group of students that concentrated in raising awareness on immigrant students and their right to an education. He was then joined by a fellow student from the University of Houston as they shared a common interest to tell the stories of those that have not been heard.
House Bill 1403 (Now known as Senate Bill 1528) was passed in July of 2001 thus giving path to thousands of immigrant students the opportunity to attend colleges and universities across Texas paying in-state tuition. Until recently, House Bill 1403 became threatened by the backlash of the right wing and the anti-immigrant sentiment. We intend to educate others by telling the stories of students that are deeply affected by the issue. The students that each day face the adversities of the system. The students that fight back the system and exceed all the expectations but are then faced with a wall: not being able to use their degrees.
The DREAM Act is a nonpartisan piece of legislation that was introduced to the senate in 2001 and since then continues to pend in the hands of congressman. The DREAM Act is an amendment that would grant a means of legalization for immigrant students across the country under several requirements: must have graduated from a high school or college, must have lived inside the United States for at least five years, must have entered the country when they were fifteen years or younger, show good moral character among others.
The DREAM Act is the promising ray of light for many who now hold college and graduate degrees and ready to lead a career, but are unable to because of their status in the country.
