About me: Being raised in the musical Mecca of Detroit, Henry was exposed to the classics at an early age. His parents’ enrolled him in his first piano class at age four and since then, his passion has blossomed. Conerway credits his love of jazz to his father, who exposed him to jazz at a time when most youth his age were listening to more popular tunes.
“I heard it around the house and in the car and he’d play it when he helped me practice for my piano lessons. I gravitated towards the freedom that jazz represents,” Henry explained.
Before he could express that freedom as a drummer, Henry experimented with the violin in middle school. After two years as a violinist, he retired the instrument, gave the piano the cold shoulder, and tried his hand at the drums and percussion.
As a drummer, Henry received excellent ratings at the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA) competitions at both the district and state levels. He became the section leader of the Youth Arts Festival ensemble, and this experience spring-boarded him to Drum Major in his senior year of high school. His musical activities extended beyond school and band camps to include performing with the Detroit Civic Orchestra, the Civic Jazz Orchestra, and the city’s first All-City High School Marching Band.
The well-rounded style with which Conerway plays was developed from performing in various musical genres. His influences stem from the likes of Marcus Belgrave, Art Blakey and Ali Jackson. As a young rising star in Detroit during his teens, to his young life in Atlanta, he has become recognized for his ability to provide music in any venue from the church, to the symphony hall, to the hip-hop clubs. Henry’s loyalty remains with the genre he has loved since birth—jazz.
“It’s cool to play someone else’s work, but jazz allows room for creativeness,” Conerway expresses. “When playing someone else’s compositions in jazz, I can tell their story the way I experienced it. I don’t just have to add my emotion, I can tell my story through it because I can relate.”
Henry attends Morehouse College where he majors in Music with a concentration in Composition. His music activities on the collegiate scene include section leader in the marching and concert bands, the principal chairs in both the Atlanta University Center-wide Orchestra and the Morehouse College Jazz Ensemble, and other performing ensembles around the community. He believes his role in Jaspects is more than that of a drummer, but an ambassador of beats. “I must move the listener and make them feel what I feel. I do that by keeping an authenticity about my craft,” Conerway said.
