Are there swamps in Eugene? There must be. How else to account for the viscous sludge that seeps through my speakers whenever I crank H.C. Minds? Ain't no other ecosystem dank and dark enough to produce slabs of doom so scabrous and mean. Eyehategod's baleful Southern nastiness is an obvious touchstone, but these YOB-affiliated fiends occasionally bolt out of junk-sick slumber to deliver pummeling crust odes to caffeine (“Black Coffee”) and, yes, of course, Mr. Mephistopheles (“Blood of the Devil”). It's perfect cocktail party music if you are a deranged serial killer who likes killing people at cocktail parties. CHRIS STAMM................... .. ..
