Head In The Sand Productions is the studio arm of Mike Petkau's body. He makes records for people. He works really hard to make sure that they damn good records, too.
He usually works out of the acoustically awesome MCM Studios, but is more than happy to record wherever your pretty little heart desires. He's got some good gear, some good mics, and most importantly: good taste. Well, we hope.
In the past year he's done The Record Of The Week Club, Paper Moon, Todd Hunter, Ian La Rue and The Other Brothers. Add to that a few albums in progress, a few demo's, some mastering jobs... life is busy. Life is good.
Mike also did the sound design and co-wrote the score for Cattle Call which won Best Experimental Film at SXSW, and also showcased at Sundance, Toronto IFF, and a pile of other festivals. Its a pretty rad little movie, sort of a music video for the "song of the auctioneer". Directed by Winnipeg film luminaries Matthew Rankin and Mike Maryniuk.
Lastly, but most importantly, he also plays in 3 neat little bands. You should check them out. Les Jupes. The Liptonians. Ian La Rue & The Condor.
I'm getting relatively close to wanting to get back in the studio soon. What time frame do you have open in the next few months? I'm hoping to have a record finished before I go to New York. It would be nice to have a new record for the Trout Forest Music Festival, too. Whole different ball game this time around. A band with consistent members who want to practice, fully written songs, and, although still quite eclectic, a slightly more consistent direction. My dilemma right now is finances. Hoping I might get some kind of grant. Otherwise, looking at some sort of plan. I had such a great time working with you last time, Michael, and I am thrilled with what you have accomplished so far. I'm more invested in my music life than I have ever been.
Let's do a beer sometime soon. I could use some advice. Keep impressing us, Mr. Michael. It's been a banner year for you. Fantastic...
Hello Mike! I see that your studio is a direct replica of my famous 'Silver Star' studio in LA. Pleasure to make your internet friendship. The Legendary Harv Stevens
