Named after a Kate Bush song of the same title, West Australian dance band Heads We’re Dancing has developed unique rhythms and melodies supported by strong lyrics and a big, global groove. Described as energetic, inspiring and innovative the band’s performances have attracted an enthusiastic following around their home state, and now on a global level following their recent UK tour, which included three weeks at one of the world’s biggest festivals. Reviews on our website from our time in the UK.
Celebrating their 12th year together, the 4-piece, consisting of Karla Dawson (vocals and keys), Alan Dawson (bass and vocals), Tom Francas (keys, guitar and vocals), and Mike Brady (percussion and vocals) has played at numerous festivals and venues in Western Australia including Fairbridge, Nannup, Down South and UWA Fringe Festivals, and was the support act for the WA leg of The Stiff Gins tour.
In 2005 HWD were included on the Kiss My WAMi CD compilation and have consistently performed at WAMI showcases (two-week long events held by the West Australian Music Industry Association).
Thanks largely to ArtsWA grants, the band has been able to tour the east coast of Australia and in July 2006 went on their first overseas tour spending over a month touring, starting at the Eastern Haze Festival in England, where they were on the main stage alongside retro legends Hawkwind, and culminating in a fifteen night residence at The Wee Red Bar as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Heads We’re Dancing were also invited to play on the main stage at the Fringe Sunday concert, an annual event which attracts an estimated 200,000 people, and during the festival they were asked to perform a night at the legenday "Jam House" In 2007 the band returned to the UK, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which included an invitation to perform at the "Australian Fringe Showcase" in the world renowned Spiegel Tent.
Heads We’re Dancing has released four successful CDs (Self-titled, Jagaavo, Headspace and Tunnel Vision). Dust and Sun, a track from Headspace, was described by DJ Wayne S of Discophonic Productions in the UK as "Never failing to transport me away from a rainy winters day here in the UK, with its exotic sunshine vibes". This track has received airplay in the UK, the USA and Canada. Inspired by this, DJ Wayne S and Greek producer El Padrino remixed the band's song What You Get. This remix is included on the band’s latest CD (Tunnel Vision) and this is now being played by DJ’s throughout the European club scene and invited interest from record labels at the 2005 London Calling event at Earls Court.
Constructed as a twisting, bounding, spiraling adventure through the minds of these two talented producers, ‘Branes’ consistantly grows in attitude and involvement: years of dancefloor adventures are clearly etched into the basslines and leads that emanate from each and every track, including the epic Weird, Sick & Twisted remix that has already been tearing up dancefloors across the world! Cutting-edge production and depth of emotion makes this debut offering from M-Theory destined to redefine your world!

Hey Heads We're Dancing. Thanks for responding to our current Friends drive and adding Bands@Manjimup. We are doing this because we have a few really exciting events coming up like our recent concert, on Friday 20th, featuring Elora Danan (photo below) on their debut album tour, Manji prog rock band Ashoka and Perth ambient rockers Laced Affair. It was a high energy show with fantastic sound, and those who came got to meet the bands for more than an hour afterwards. The pictures are now up as a slideshow. Check them out at the top of our profile.
Next, we'll be hosting the biggest regional event in this year's WAMi Festival calendar, on 22nd May. The support acts: Abbe May, Sneaky Weasel Gang, Desert Radio and Ashoka. The headline is now definitely CALERWAY. Following day Abbe (songwriting) , Drew Goddart (guitar) from Karnivool, Roy Martinez (bass) and Nick Johnson (drum tuning, cymbal selection and kit set-up) from Eskimo Joe will feature as lecturers in our B@M Youth Muso Workshops.
The June gig will feature an even bigger headline band, probably supported by local heroes Ashoka and Electrostatik.
We'll keep you updated with bulletins and you may want to tap into the bands listed on our Top 40. You'll always find the performers at our next gig right up the top. At the other end you'll find bands that have recently played, followed by acts, who want to play at B@M. Send us a comment if you like them and they maybe get the go.
Lastly: PLEASE VOTE AGAINST DAYLIGHT SAVING! It prevents proper FX lighting at outdoors concerts before 9pm in summer. Especially for support bands. It’s gotta go!!! Peace, The Terminator
