About me: Laguna Art Muesum PresentsHeart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence
June 24 to September 30, 2007Organized by Laguna Art Museum, Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence is the first museum exhibition and major retrospective to focus on the art of Rick Griffin (1944-1991). A cult figure that set the iconographic terrain for three distinct west coast subcultures, Griffin has had a significant impact on contemporary visual culture. This exhibition, organized by guest curators Greg Escalante and Doug Harvey for Laguna Art Museum, surveys 30 years of Griffin’s work from the 1960s until his death in 1991.
Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin’s Transcendence is accompanied by a full-color, 156-page catalog with several essays. Published in association with Gingko Press, it is the first publication to address the artist’s impact on the surf, rock and born again Christian movements.
The exhibition and book were made possible through the generous support of presenting sponsor Hurley
