Sounds Like
Hippie Metal! Just think of it like this: it's an eclectic mix of metal, rock, alternative, blues, punk/ska, and hip-hop.
Jeremy Wooten - At the age of nine, in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas, Jeremy fostered a love of music, and taught himself to play the guitar. Through the years Jeremy has played in many bands, nearly being signed to a record label with his band, Discarded Youth, in 1997. After the breaking up of Discarded Youth, Jeremy went on to learn how to play the drums, bass, and keyboards, all the while expanding his knowledge of the guitar. Moving to Virginia in 2005 he auditioned for a few bands before landing a spot as the guitarist in Hearts Aside.
Candace Levi - For all of her life Candace has had a deep interest in music. She has always been readily involved in chorus and choir from Elementary School to High School, learning to read music, play piano, and becoming a lead alto in her High School Woman's Ensemble. Regardless of being left-handed, Candace plays both guitar and keyboards in a right-handed manner claiming it to be easier. After being accepted to both District and All State Choirs (Virginia), Candace went on to found the band Hearts Aside, citing that there aren't enough bands with a strong female lead.
The Recording Process, and Goal:
The recordings posted were recorded completely by Jeremy Wooten, and Candace Levi. The process they use to do so is called multi-track recording. Meaning different parts to songs (ex. Guitar, bass drums, vocals, etc.) Are recorded individually. Everything you hear was recorded part by part by only Jeremy and Candace, and not an entire band.
Unfortunately they are not rich by any means. The equipment they have to work with is all more than 15 years old. The central unit they use to record on is an old TASCAM 414 Portastudio. Conceived in the mid 70’s, the technology never really changed much. It records music on to four tracks to a very old school cassette tape. This presents all sorts of problems professional recording studios with modern equipment don’t run in to. Since it’s a tape, and not digital (unless there is a pause or break in the music) they must record nonstop depending on getting one perfect take all the way through. Also when they can cut a song in to parts (ex. Verse, chorus, bridge, etc) hitting record on the cassette player creates a loud skip, and whine in the recording that’s unavoidable. So, when you hear what sounds like a big skip in the song, that’s the twenty-some odd year old recorder. As well as when you hear them hit one or two off notes in a progression. The reason is the take they did was perfect all the way through, till the few off notes. Without digital aid to fix the notes, you would have to play the entire song all the way through over, and over until not one single mistake was made. Which, most human beings can tell you, is near impossible. Especially when tensions mount over messing up in the first place.
All the effects you hear (ex. Reverb, mix downs to computer, etc) are done via a process that technically shouldn’t be done. Since the recorder is run off cassette tapes, there is no real way to just transfer it to digital. What their method ends up having to be is quite complicated. They use a chord head adaptor for a standard guitar line to scale the head down to fit in the computer. Then they plug into the computers line in, and the cassette players line out. Then they use a free sound recording program to recording the music on to the computer. From there they have a very limited choices on effects, and compression to add to clean up the tracks a bit, and get the song in to MP3 format.
The drums, piano, organ, symphony, and pretty much anything but guitar and vocals, are done on a Radioshack general midi. It’s like a combination keyboard, and very low quality drum machine. All of the music like piano, organ, and symphony are played live. While the drums are played by the midi itself, and is limited to beats it has stored. The drumbeats can’t be edited note by note. Candace, and Jeremy have many songs written they would love to record, but because of the extremely poor drum machine, and it’s in ability to switch tempos prevents them from doing so.
The goal of these recordings isn’t to sound perfect. The point is to showcase Candace and Jeremy’s musical talent, as well as song writing ability, to recording labels. Their motto is, “If you like what we do on the crap equipment we have, imagine what we could do in a professional modern studio,” The band is committed to making their mark in the music industry, and they can use all the support they can get. Getting the word out, and telling friends about Hearts Aside, and their profile is greatly appreciated. The more support they can get is giant steps forward to a recording deal, and they appreciate it more than anything.
