Nathan Yost, Christian Chidester, Daniel Owen, Carter Owen, and Ryan Zimmerman make up Charlotte, North Carolina's very own indie/emo rock band, Heartwood. Heartwood began its efforts with two local musicians (Nathan Yost & former drummer Andy Hoffman) wanting to start something new and rare in the Charlotte music scene. After considering many genres of music, their style was pinpointed in the winter of 2003 at a friend’s birthday party. Heartwood, a name chosen by Andy Hoffman for its simplicity and sound, was now only half formed. By January of 2004, Daniel Owen joined the band after playing with Charlotte independent band favorites One Amazin' kid and Laurelei. Now the threesome realized that with their melodic sound they needed a keyboardist. Between the months of January and April they tried out keyboardist with no success. However, one Saturday afternoon Carter Owen came to jam and proved himself to be a perfect fit and became the 4th and final member of heartwood. After playing many shows throughout the year Heartwood released it's first independent EP called EP NO.1 in March, 2005. By the end of July, 2005 Andy Hoffman joined the U.S. Coastguard and Christian Chidester became the new beat man for the band. 18 months later, after playing many shows and writing more and more songs, Heartwood decided that something was missing from the basic sound of a four piece band. After an extensive search for a new drummer, Ryan Zimmerman was added as the new drummer and Christian moved over to guitar to pursue his true passion. Currently, Heartwood is performing as a five piece band with two guitarists. During the months of February and March of 2007 Heartwood recorded their second EP. On March 26, 2007, Heartwood released EP NO.2.
