Heather Maxwell is bandleader, singer/songwriter for her all original, ethno-urban music style called Afrika Soul, and the lead vocalist for Inner Rhythm, a world jazz band led by renowned drummer, Robert Jospé. Maxwell’s voice is rich and earthy and she sings in English, French, Portuguese and several African languages. Jazz, R&B, Soul, Mande, and Wassolu; the various blends and mixes of these genres resonate in each of her songs. Originally from Flint, Michigan, Ms. Maxwell went from singing in churches with her family gospel band to singing and playing balafon in 'soirees' - village dance parties-- in rural Minkaland of Mali, West Africa.
Today, she performs and collaborates alongside some of Africa's biggest stars such as Oumou Sangaré, Salif Keita, Neba Solo, Vusi Mahlasela, Tiken Jah Fakoli, and Habib Koite. Ms. Maxwell also plays traditional African guitar (kamalen n'goni), marimba (balafon), and she dances traditional Mande styles; all of which feature prominently in her Afrika Soul performances.
Solo albums: Keneya Ji (Samassa 1990), Mali-West Africa. Pygmee (EMI 1991), Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Afrika Soul is anticipated for the fall of 2010. Featured Vocalist on: Heartbeat (Random Chance 2006) New York, NY. With Robert Jospé.

She has published in various academic journals and has worked with Carnegie Hall, Smithsonian Institute,Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, Harvard University, University of Virginia, Indiana University, Richmond Public Library, and the Music Resource Center
