I decided to put up a solo page, though I do play with lots of other people. Until recently I hadn't played solo in public for a couple of years, but I'm now reviving my solo songs and instrumentals and writing some new ones.
I've now got a couple of gaps in my teaching schedule. I don't teach children but if you want to learn acoustic guitar or bass guitar, or you already play and want some new ideas, or just fancy tidying up your technique, you know where to come (Norwich!)
I teach practical playing for performance, or just for fun, not grades though.
Influences
Derek Cubitt, Dave Lamport, Derek Brimstone, Carol Kaye, The Beatles, Rick Hayward, Joyce Grenfell, Bach, The Kinks, Dave Brubeck, Bob Dylan, Pentangle individually and ensemble, Shirley Collins, Jackie Flavelle, Greg McDonald, Tommy Emmanuel, Cream, Sadie Nine, Jobim, Davy Graham, Elgar, Queen, Phil Brooke, Stan Webb, Pino Palladino, Yes, Brad Paisley and everyone I've shared a stage or studio with - I thank you all.
I've been playing bass for three years with Bright Spark, and for six years with Rick Hayward as the duo A Little Uneasy, though I do play with lots of other people, anyone who'll have me I suppose. My bass is a spectacular 5-string fretless designed to be played on a floor stand and built by the brilliant Mike Walsh at Iceni Music, where the Zoot basses are made. I don't think I'm really an 'exciting' sort of bassist though - I am not a flash player, more in the 'useful' category.
However, I put up this page as an outlet for my own solo songs as, for the previous three or four years, I had rather let them die. I still remember all the words, though most of them I can't actually play any more to a decent standard, as the bass had taken over and I had let my guitar playing get rather rusty.
All the songs I shall put up here are ones I played live to audiences, and by heart, as I never sing a song other than from memory. If I 'dry', I dry - a risk I'll take as I still think that's better than singing to a piece of paper, and definitely gives the proceedings an edge for a song like News, Weather & Archers... Playing an instrument from the 'dots' is fine by me, all the best orchestras do. But singers should always sing TO their listeners FROM the heart, say I! So feel free to comment if you agree with me, or disagree.
Hi Heather I guess I have to congatulate you too with "All I've Got" from Anne Brown..! Your 'Maybe I' is just one wondefull add to the album!, I really like it and the bass rocks..;) Nice to be on the same album as you.. respect, Dani Z.
