HEATH HABERLIN-BIOGRAPHY
Heath Haberlin was born in San Francisco(born Jauary 8, 1970)and raised in Mill Valley. Heath was born on Elvis Presley’s birthday almost a month late, "My mom is the biggest Elvis fan in the world so I am convinced she held me in until the King’s B-Day". He currently resides in both San Francisco and Mill Valley. Heath is San Francisco-based guitarist, singer-songwriter and musician. He is also a producer, arranger and author who also teaches guitar, bass, piano and songwriting. Heath sings and in particular excels at guitar playing(electric, acoustic and slide), songwriting, arranging and producing for which he has been hired as a professional in the studio and on stage for nearly 20 years.
Heath Haberlin’s unique upbringing in the San Francisco Bay Area around a both musical and artistic enviornment exposed him to a wealth of great music, musicians and artists. Heath was raised in a self-proclaimed "musically rich neighborhood" where members of the Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Grace Slick, and Sammy Hagar all lived in close proximity. Heath recalls a summer evening when Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead were jamming in a neighbors living room across the street from his childhood home when the local sheriff broke up the jam for being too loud and the party too big. The Mill Valley native also lived on Mt. Tamalpais just blocks away from pop-culture mecca, where some of the "Ewok Village" scenes were filmed for various Star Wars productions such as Return of the Jedi and his high school's gym was used for scenes in George Lucas' 1973 film, "American Graffiti". He attended Tamalpais High School, in Mill Valley, California, with late rapper Tupac Shakur, Chris Chaney the bass player of Jane’s Addiction as well as a member of Alanis Morissette’s touring and recording band from 1995 to 2002 when she sold an astonishing 30 million records worldwide, actress Courtney Thorne-Smith and MTV VJ China Kantner daughter of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Paul Kantner.
Heath’s guitar playing career began at age thirteen with a guitar and lessons. He started playing professionally as a 19 year old kid in the coffee houses of Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Fairfax and Bolinas house parties. He began playing professionally as a teenager in Marin and San Francisco, in local clubs, at festivals, and at private events. He was a music major at both College Of Marin and UC Berkeley before receiving a baseball scholarship at the University Of San Francisco. He not only became proficient at the acoustic, singer-songwriter, folk, slide and rock styles of his time but he also crossed deeply into the field of blues music as well. Haberlin says he was "addicted to the blues", as a young man. Heath has come to know and understand the blues idiom through his extensive studies and teachings of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the three King’s(BB King, Albert King and Freddie King) as well as Jimi Hendrix, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Guitar Slim and Grant Green. Heath’s most important early blues influence was the 1973 movie, "Jimi Hendrix", in which, Hendrix performs, "Hear My Train A-Comin’", acoustically on a stool(which was later action off on E-Bay) on a acoustic 12-string guitar. The movie also includes interviews with childhood friend Liberty Ellman’s mother Jenifer Dean . She was Jimi Hendrix’s roommate with Hendrix and his girlfriend Devon Wilson.
Mill Valley’s legendary Sweetwater Saloon had a profound influence on Heath's musical upbringing. Heath's childhood friend was the late Tro Patterson, son of Jeanie Patterson Sweetwater's original owner. Heath fondly recalls sneeking into Sweetwater underage and seeing live blues for the first time-blues icon John Lee Hooker. He also recalls playing pool and talking about Willie Mays and the San Francisco Giants with John Lee Hooker downstairs, backstage at the Sweetwater before gigs and on set breaks. Mill Valley’s Village Music also had a lasting musical influence. John Goodard would direct and advise Heath on "real" artists and their music. Also seeing live performances by local blues musicians such as Joe Louis Walker(with whom Heath performed), Bonnie Raitt sitting in at the Sweetwater Saloon and the late Luther Tucker who Heath would see regularly at the Fouth Street Tavern in San Rafael had a lasting influence.
Heath is a known musician at Mill Valley’s legendary Sweetwater Saloon. The nightclub has featured Jerry Garcia, Elvis Costello, Bob Weir, Ry Cooder, Santana and John Lee Hooker. Local prominent artists include Bonnie Hayes, Heather Combs and Storm. Heath has played there with San Francisco Lilith Fair winner Noelle Hampton, Storm of the telvision show "Rockstar-Supernova", Heather Combs, Dean Del Ray, Cole Tate, and Vince Converse bands. He played at Sweetwater’s enviornmental monthly benefits concert and the "Soundwood Jam Series." He has played with the Allyson Paige & Lynn Asher Bands featuring Raz Kennedy and bassist Bobby Vega at their Sweetwater and Great American Musical Hall gigs. Heath was also in the Sweetwater Saloon’s houseband for up and coming singer-songwriters as the ’67 Satellites.
Heath has played countless gigs for the last 19 years with the Tommy Castro Band, Chris Cobb Band, Allyson Paige, Leah Tysse, Joe Louis Walker, Freddie Roulette, Finis Tasby, Joyce Garcia, Cathy Lemons-Johnny Ace Blues Band and the Dave Workman Band featuring iconic Monterey blues vocalist John "Broadway" Tucker at well known San Francisco/Bay Area blues venues such as Lou’ s Pier 47 S.F. and the "Saloon" in North Beach(Haberlin has been performing in the Saloon bar in North Beach for 16 years. It’s a classic San Francisco dive bar, the oldest bar in the city, going back over 125 years. When you enter, you get the feeling some of the original inhabitants(ladies of the night, drunks, musicians and Beat poets)are still hanging around. Heath has also played at the North Beach Festival with the Chris Cobb Band featuring blues vocalist Allyson Paige as well as headlining at the Saint James Gate in Belmont. Heath has opened shows for Tommy Castro at Slims on several occasions as well as Eric Martin of Mr.Big at Santa Rosa’s Last Day Saloon, the Mother Hips at San Francisco’s Last Day Saloon(at the club’s 25th anniversary celebration) and at the Edge in Palo Alto and blues great Linda Tillery at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall.
