Heavy Üsker, aka Rob Smith, is from Cambridge, England. He moved to Madrid a few years ago and works in a bank. But don't let the day job fool ya!
Rob has been DJing for 10 years ever since he first went to the Mo´Wax sessions in Oxford. An avid record buyer, Rob´s ear is always tuned to the funk. As a child his dad played him stuff like the big band sounds of Johnny Dankworth, and he´s sure that has influenced what he listens to today: Sahib Shihab, Peter Herbolzheimer, Don Cunningham, etc, what with their syncopated rhythms and layered horn and string arrangements.
For those of you befuddled with the name Heavy Üsker, here´s the story: One night at Madrid´s Kathmandu nightspot he heard an amazing track. Through Rob´s beergoggles, the name on the record cover appeared to say "Heavy Üsker" - not the case - it really turned out to be Danish fusion band Heavy Joker! Thus the name Heavy Üsker was born!
Make sure to check out his slammin´ remix 12" of Cesar Mariano and CIA´s "Futebol de Bar" (available on Gilles Peterson's "Gilles Peterson in Brazil" compilation). Also be sure to tune in to Rob´s monthly podcast, "Radio Madrid", with a tasteful selection of Jazz, Afro, Funk, Latin and Brazilian http://radiomadrid.blogspot.com.
