The beginnings of Heavyweight Sound System can be traced back to Chris Aubrey [AKA Shortstroke] and his Smokescreen Sound System. Chris began a Tuesday reggae night at the Pub Of Love in the spring of 2000. He was assisted on many occasions by Kon Moulder [AKA DJ Who-dat], fellow reggae fanatic and a long-time promotor of the Nashville punk and hardcore scene [stretching back to the mid-1980s]. Chris left Nashville for college at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA to pursue a broadcasting degree. While in Statesboro, he DJ'd at the campus radio station WVGS. He was on a live turntablist show called The Fifth Dimension and then his own reggae show called King at the Controls. He also had two residencies at Club Legends in Statesboro and Club Ibiza in Savannah spinning breakbeat/house/two-step/UK Garage. Upon Shortstroke's move to Georgia, Kon created the Half Stepper Sound System and began a residency at The End which lasted through the summer of 2001. He was assisted on most nights by Craig Allen, half of the Nashville/New York dub duo Phase Selector Sound.
A string of guest dj's filled out the roster periodically.
Fall of 2001 saw a name change to Heavyweight Sound System and a new residency at The Pub Of Love on Thursdays. The lineup now included Kon, Joshua Elrod [the other half of Phase Selector Sound and back in Nashville with nuff big tunes from NY], Craig, and a Jamaican MC named Milo who toasted (sang) over B-sides of 45s and did some juggling of his own. Shortstroke was in town for the grand finale Christmas party which saw record bar sales at The Pub. In early 2002, Kon moved to Los Angeles for work. In the summer of 2002, Joshua and Craig hosted a roots reggae, dub and dancehall Monday night at the Pub Of Love [sponsored by Southern Comfort]. Kon returned to Nashville in late summer 2002 with some killer new roots 45s to mash up the dance.
That year also saw the Djs making guest appearances at the Caribbean Hut.
With Joshua back in New York, Heavyweight Sound System opened for the legendary Jamaican radio personality/dub producer/solo artist/Clash collaborator Mikey Dread at the Slow Bar on July 17, 2003. Mr. Dread was interested in HSS's use of a sampler and, after hearing the set that followed his four hour show, requested a mix tape.
Craig collaborated with Jonathan Marx from Lambchop to produce 'Punky Reggae Party' on WRVU [Vanderbilt University's student-run radio station] in the summer of 2003. This Wednesday night radio program explored the musical connections between reggae and punk [as well as post-punk, country and Brazilian music]. A controversial management move forced all community volunteers out of the program schedule at the start of the fall semester.
Heavyweight Sound System hosted Tiki Tuesdays at the Mercy Lounge throughout August and September. This event was sponsored by AirJamaica, Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum, Cook Travel, Lightning 100, Team Green, SuperClubs and the Nashville Scene. The final show included a AirJamaica vacation giveaway.
In November and December of 2003, with Chris Aubrey back in town, HSS hosted a Monday night residency at Bar Twenty3.
In August and September of 2004, Heavyweight Sound System linked up with Silver Star Sound System to give Nashville the best in reggae every Friday at The Asylum. Silver Star is the premier reggae sound system in Nashville and previously was the house sound at the Caribbean Hut. Silver Star features selectors Saddest and Bigga spinning the latest in crucial modern roots, rub-a-dub classics and the rootical side of dancehall. Saddest's record box comes fully loaded with dub plate specials and sound boy burial tunes recorded especially for Silver Star.
Heavyweight Sound System continues to make guest appearances at private parties, the Caribbean Hut and at DJ events such as Spin Echo [at Basante's in Green Hills].
HSS has been called 'the premier tandem for dub, dancehall and reggae' by The Rage, and the Nashville Scene has remarked that their 'deep knowledge and love of reggae music makes for some excellent, bass-heavy dj sets.'
Currently, Heavyweight Sound System now holds down Friday nights at Caribbean Hut.

On a side note, ROIR [NY] released Phase Selector Sound's debut CD 'Disassemble Dub' in 1999. In 2000, PSS appeared on the compilation 'Docking Sequence: BSI Campaign Vol 1' [BSI Records/Portland]. 2003 saw the release of the 7" single 'Sound of an Aquarium' [Lush Records/Sweden] and an appearance on the compilation 'Babylon Is Ours: The USA In DUB' [Select Cuts/Germany]. Phase Selector Sound also has a track on the compilation 'DUB AFTER TIME: A LOOK BACK AT BSI RECORDS' [BSI Records / Portland] released on May 31, 2004.
