A release party and performance were held at the Record Exchange, followed by a larger show at Terrapin Station later in the evening.
People trickled into Terrapin Station, slowly accumulating at tables and on couches, drinking two dollar bottles of Session and listening to the bar's constant stream of Bob Marley, Tool and the Grateful Dead.
Local metal act Heibarger played first, and Boise's hippie bar became a decidedly different place as they took the stage. Heibarger only played two songs, but each was epic. To call Heibarger a simple stoner metal band in the vein of Fu Manchu, Kyuss and Nebula would undermine their creativity. When seeing Heibarger play, it is nigh impossible not to form a mental picture of their music. Their heavy grooves, stomping drums and piercing leads painted a picture of a hellish, plague-stricken wasteland, not a simple peyote-trip desert with some swirling colors and freaky shadows. No, this desert was nearly pitch black, lit only by red, spiraling stars and a greedy vampire moon. The sand itself melted and whrilpooled, just as molten and unpredictable as Heibarger's changing tempos, fuzzed-out riffs and sparse vocals (peppered with birdcalls, no less). A blues lick slid into thirty seconds of thrash and it seemed completely natural, and completely nightmarish, all in the best possible way. Heibarger distilled the essence of space rock/stoner metal and adapted it perfectly for their Boise home.
