A BIT OF HISTORY:
Heinz Winckler is the first winner of the South African Idols competition that took place in June 2002. Since then he has released 3 chart topping studio albums and a Live DVD, performed Chasing Shadows on the sound track of Disney's Treasure Planet, came fourth in World Idols (Dec 2003) beating the UK's Will Young, and has been nominated for 2 South African Music Awards.
Heinz started playing guitar when he was 16 and started by leading worship in his local church. When he got to University to study law, he joined a band where he sang, played acoustic guitar and wrote songs for 4 years. In 2001 he decided to go solo and after a small but successful coastal tour during the sunny South African December holidays, he knew that he had to make music his life. Shortly after that he heard about the Pop Idol phenomenon and decided to enter. The rest is history!
Today Heinz is a house hold name in South Africa where he has done countless shows, including opening for Westlife and he's guest starred on several local soapies and talk shows.
More recently he had the great fortune of playing "Roger Davis" on the 2007-2008 USA national tour of the Broadway hit musical, RENT. The tour was mainly throughout the USA, but also went to Japan and Canada. The tour had Heinz and his new found family of cast, crew and band perform 215 shows to an estimated 300 000 people! Winckler says it was an awesome experience that he will never forget.

The 2007-2008 Rent tour was in Japan for 2 weeks in Dec 2007. On our final night in Tokyo something amazing happened: the whole audience stayed behind till after the outro music was done, and then they proceeded to sing to us the finale song! It was awesome. Check it out:
