Much has been made in popular culture of the mystical power of twins, from Romulus and Remus, Castor and Pollux or Chang and Eng on down to Mary Kate and Ashley. From its inception, Hell at Night's secret language has been the musical interplay of twin brothers Dan (vocals/guitar) and Nart (drums) Chejoka. For almost three years, the duo has pumped out their particular brand of intricate, metal-laced pop/rock around Orange County and Los Angeles, garnering a local following of fans in the process.
An album should be a series of clever songs, each with its own little surprise inside. With a twist here, a turn there, or a bridge that leads the song somewhere off the path only to come wandering back, using a series of unlikely resolution chords. The listener should find each song to be an ear-pleasing discovery, composed of chord progressions, melodies, and lyrics that are able to elicit an emotion or a reaction of some sort or maybe even that elusive unfamiliar familiarity in a song. Hell at Night have spoken that secret language for a while, and now with Battle of the Spirit, they've provided a Rosetta Stone to fans who have forgotten how.
