I love the burning kiss of hot steel...and welding, fabricating, manufacturing, blacksmithing, forging and forge welding, antique blacksmith tools, ornamental ironwork, wrought iron, custom metal forming, metal sculpture, classical sculpture, art, repoussage, snow sculpture, rat rods, lifted trucks, car kustomizing, bikes, metal detecting and treasure hunting, thrift store shopping/garage sale-ing, pin-ups, burlesque, war documentaries, good cigars, old port, good whiskey and blue rare steak, and tattoos. I'm also a big fan of flat black paint jobs with old skool flames...so that's how I painted my welding truck.
Music
I need to listen to hard punk and metal music to work with hard steel. I love punk, hardcore, grindcore, industrial, electronic, and psychobilly. I'm also a longtime fan of Depeche Mode.
Movies
Conan the Barbarian, Perfume.
Television
Robot Chicken.
Books
Technical manuals, especially antique books on blacksmithing, ornamental ironwork and other metalworking techniques...anything that has a lot of pictures of how to make things, and math.
Heroes
Bernini and Rodin, and Hephaestus, Greek god of blacksmithing, fire, and metalwork.

I'm a welder and artist blacksmith. I started working with metal at the age of 15 and haven't looked back. I've been a journeyman "B" pressure welder for over 10 years now, and have a number of other welding tickets as well, including my STT, TIG stainless and TIG carbon pressure tickets, STT root, FCAW uphand, my downhand and uphand progression SMAW tickets, and all position CWB, among others.
After working in and managing shops for other people for years, I started my own business, Hell 'N' Back Welding Ltd. Through Hell 'N' Back I do portable welding, fabricating, and manufacturing. I mainly work in northern Alberta, in and around the heart of the Canadian oilpatch, but I've worked all over the province, in B.C., and in the arctic circle too (Yellowknife and Inuvik). I've designed, prototyped and/or manufactured everything from tree spades to arctic sleds to physiotherapy equipment, and welded everything from boilers to casing bowls to combines to 22 gauge stainless piping. I am equally at home in the shop or out in the field, at the forge or on an oil rig.
I named my company Hell 'N' Back Welding because I'll go to hell 'n' back to get the job done...and because I've personally been to hell and back, on the job and off.
I love blacksmithing, and tell people I'm a welder by trade but a blacksmith by passion. I do blacksmithing demonstrations at museums, and create custom ornamental ironwork for homes and businesses. (See pics in my "Blacksmithing" photo album; I'll add more as I can.)
And last but not least at all, I sculpt solid steel, usually blending industrial elements with classical human forms. I don't do casting; instead, my work is created using traditional and modern blacksmithing and welding techniques, and by carving the steel. My work has been given as corporate gifts to former Premier of Alberta Ralph Klein and bestselling author Mel Hurtig, and has appeared in galleries and art shows in Alberta. (See pics of my art in my "Metal Sculptures" photo album; I'll add more as I can.) I'm working towards being able to do my art full-time and am always willing to take commissions.
I'm always willing to take on welding and manufacturing jobs big or small, any type of welding repair, and I accept commissions for custom metalworking and sculpture. If you can dream it, I can build it.
Also, if you have any questions about welding, tricks of the trade, the welding business or the Alberta oilpatch, I talk to people from all over Canada and the U.S. all the time and I'm happy to help out. There isn't much I haven't done at this point, and I even sat on the apprenticeship board here for a while. I'm always happy to help new welders starting out, or point other welders looking for info in the right direction.

Tired of Feeling Tired? By Amy Wong (Just Sharing Some Happy Thoughts) "I wish I had more energy." The key is to know when your energy is down and what you can do to turn it around." In his new book author Jon Gordon, The 10-Minute Energy Solution, he maps out a 30-day plan with a simple 10-minute exercise each day to give you a boost physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Some favorites are:
1. Start your day with a positive energy walk. Step briskly and say what you're thankful for. Think affirmative thoughts like I look forward to the rest of the day, the people I'm going to meet, the things I'm going to learn. Or complete these sentences: I believe that... I trust that...
2. Neutralize the "energy vampires," The people who drain you. Counter their negative comments and attitude with kindness and compassion. Another person's negativity can only bring you down if you let it.
3. Lose your mind. No, don't go crazy. Go meditate. Sit in a quiet place. Focus on your breathing. Inhale and think of a word like so or one or peace. "You want to lose your thoughts, your thinking mind, so you can be one with the moment," Gordon explains.
4. Add play to your day. Run around the yard with your kids or your dog. Put on your favorite pick-me-up song and dance. Go for a bike ride. Build something out of Legos. Write the lyrics to your life as a funny country song.
5. Connect. Call an old friend you haven't talked to in a while. Invite a coworker to lunch. Drop a line—not by email but by good, old-fashioned pen and paper—to someone you don't see often.
6. Smile and laugh. Walk around your office and smile at your coworkers. They won't think you're strange, just in a good mood. Several times a day, think of a funny joke or experience, and laugh.
